Rumor: iOS 5 to include widgets?

May 27, 2011

iPad, iPhone

In an article discounting rumors of a hardware  preview at WWDC, MG Siegler over at TechCrunch has dropped several pieces of information he’s been hearing about the next version of iOS 5. We also aren’t expecting a hardware refresh this summer, but rather a better look at Lion, Apple’s revamped cloud services and maybe a healthy side of iOS 5.

If Apple’s next mobile OS is on display, Siegler expects to see “completely revamped notifications and widgets.”

Widgets would be welcome, especially on the larger iPad, where a Dashboard-like environment would work quite well.

The notifications in iOS are currently a disaster. With pop-ups interrupting everything and red badges ganging up on users more and more, Apple could learn a lot from the systems within WebOS and Android. Lastly, TechCrunch has heard more about the Nuance-powered voice control system expected to show up in iOS.

Any of these changes would be more than welcome, but if Apple adds all three to the next version of iOS, it would be one heck of an update.

Not gonna use those eyecandies. Got them all removed from my desire z. Sucking the juice. I have aniPhone 4 too. Now will wait for Nexus 3 and iPhone 5.

Haha that last line is funny: "Any of these changes would be more than welcome, but if Apple adds all three to the next version of iOS, it would be one heck of an update." considering all three have been around on Android for a long time.

Interesting... So probably, all of the Apple fans who knock MS and Android for copying iOS will ignore the fact that Apple is directly copying something that's been around since Android 1.0 and hail it as incredible innovation.

Freak, everybody copies everybody else! Apple copies Android - folders, file browsing, and now, most likely widgets and notifications.

Oh well. Maybe Google has a patent for "interactive widgets on home screens" and will collect royalties for every device that gets iOS 5. But probably not, since Google/Android has not been concerned with patent trolling, but rather, updating and improving their own OS.

Actually the funny thing is one of the cofounders of google itself was a close friend to Steve Jobs who Steve played as a mentor to him. Right before the first iPhone came out, the google dude was one of the first to see the device. Also what's also funny is Eric Schmidt was in the Board of Directors of Apple and too seen the device inside and out. Btw apple and android are copying of webos
