Munster says to expect the iPhone 4S (née iPhone 5) announcement in August

Later than normal seems to be the consensus when it comes to the next iPhone release. Everyone from analysts through to suppliers, bloggers, pundits, and prognosticators has been saying that the iPhone 5 will likely be pushed off until September this time around, unlike previous editions of the phone.

Then there’s Gene Munster, who just today joined the fray, echoing the same sentiments as those who have come before him: the 5th generation iPhone will likely go on sale in September. But, unlike those who have predicted before him, Munster also points out that a September release is right on a traditional schedule for the iPhone. According to the Munster, there has been an average of 79 days between iOS announcements and iPhone hardware announcements. Should Apple announce iOS 5 at WWDC on June 6th, the iPhone 4S announcement could fall somewhere around Aug. 24th, with a release on September 13th.

There you have it. The most logical explanation yet. Right or wrong, I’m marking off August 24th and September 19th on my calendar. Don’t laugh — I’m still rocking and iPhone 3G. I’ve been counting down to this moment for months.
