Need an indication that Apple’s taking this cloud computing thing very seriously? Apple is apparently building another data center in the Valley. According to Data Center Knowledge, Apple has signed a seven-year lease for a data center being built by DuPont Fabros Technology, and the center should be ready to go online during the third quarter of 2011.
What’s most interesting about these findings is that Apple will now have access to two huge data centers on both coasts of North America. Of course, Apple has been rumored to be working on a revamped MobileMe, also known as iCloud. We don’t know much about it, but some rumors have suggested that we could see a new kind of media locker, or iTunes in the cloud, as well as a better iDisk alternative and hosted services.
This new Santa Clara data center won’t pack the same punch as the 500,000 square foot data center in North Carolina, but it’ll certainly have some power built into the 11,000 square feet of space.
There were also rumors circulating for a while that Apple was looking into building another 500,000 square foot structure adjacent to the lot in North Carolina. There’s been no mention of it for a while, so we’re not sure if that option is still on the table at this point.
