Apple stops displaying iAds in apps for children

Apple reportedly stopped displaying iAds in applications aimed at children. Developers who have implemented Apple’s ad system in their child-friendly apps will find themselves without any iAd advertisements. Instead, the location where the iAds were meant to be will remain white.

Developer Micheal Zornek reached out to Apple’s iAd support network to find out what was happening when he noticed this change within his iOS app Dex: A Pokémon Browser and got a rather unexpected answer.

In a blog post Zornek quoted the email he got from Apple:

Hello Michael,
We periodically review the apps in the iAd Network to ensure that all apps receiving ads are aligned with the needs of our advertisers. Currently, our advertisers prefer that their advertising not appear in applications that are targeted for users that are young children, since their products are not targeted at that audience.
We appreciate your understanding.
Best Regards,
iAd Network Support Apple, Inc. 1 Infinite Loop Cupertino, CA 95014

Since his app is free on the App Store, Zornek’s revenue comes from ads within Dex. Instead of relying on the iAd network moving forward, Zornek has decided to switch to Google’s AdMob network.

According to the email quoted above, Apple decided to stop displaying ads to children once their advertisers pressured them to stop. Advertisers don’t see the users of children’s apps as a part of their target audience.

weird. I wouldnt say that a pokemon browser app is targeted at young children. more like pre teens and teenagers. Advice to developers: don't use iAds... the rug could be pulled out from under you at any moment
