Nikkan has published a report suggesting that Sharp has managed to procure a contract from Apple for the next generation iPhone displays. We’re not talking iPhone 5; instead, the report is suggesting that the display will find its way into the iPhone 6. Yup, you read that right. iPhone 6 rumors are here!
Apple Insider is reporting that the displays could be Sharp’s “next-gen” p-Si LCD line. The new displays are lighter and thinner, which would translate nicely into a new iPhone 6 design.
From the Apple Insider article,
This technology has allowed companies to create “system on glass” devices, in which the optical sensors, signal processing circuits and other components are located directly on the glass substrate. This negates the need for additional components in a device like an iPhone, saving space within the device and even improving battery life with increased efficiency.
Apple’s always looking for a way to save space in their devices, and this could be a huge plus for the company. Who knows, maybe this p-Si LCD will free up some space for a NFC chipset.
A quick aside on the rumors
The fact that we’re hearing very little about the iPhone 5, and the rumor mill is jumping right into the iPhone 6 suggests that we might actually be seeing an iPhone 4S instead of a revolutionary new iPhone 5.
So far the iPhone 5 (4S) rumors suggest tweaks on the inside instead of on the outside. There’s not any real and concrete evidence that suggests what’s happening either way. Right now it’s all speculation, but if we had to guess, we’d assume that we’ll be seeing an iPhone 4S this time around.
I also have to give Stephen a bit of a hat tip here. He suggested we’d see an iPhone 4S months ago.
