Developer interest in Android dropping, behind iOS

With all of the Android devices coming to market lately, it’s a little bit surprising to find out that developer frustration with the platform is continuing to grow. Results from the latest Appcelerator/IDC mobile survey show that developers are growing increasingly annoyed with device fragmentation and multiple application stores.

Of the 2,700 developers surveyed, 85 percent were interested in developing for Android, down from 86 percent. On the flipside, 86 percent of developers were interested in developing for the iPad, and 91 percent for the iPhone.

The survey also illustrates the lack of interest for the Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry platforms, both scoring under 30 percent. The most notable complaint for these devices is time constraints. Developers already have their hands full with iOS and Android platforms and don’t have time to take on two more devices.

The good news for Android is that both of the major concerns pointed out in the study (fragmentation and multiple app stores) are addressable. Google could do something about the problems. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s in the cards for the immediate future.
