Apple sues Samsung for ripping off iPhone and iPad look and feel

April 18, 2011

Apple Inc., iPad, iPhone

The iPad war is here. It took a while for someone to finally catch up with Apple, but now that the Galaxy Tab has shipped, Apple’s none too pleased that Samsung has borrowed heavily from Apple’s playbook of UI and industrial design practices.

The funny twist is that Samsung is producing parts for Apple’s iPhone and iPad lineup. The Korean company builds the A4 and A5 chips that Apple’s relied on in the last couple of editions of their products, but, that hasn’t stopped Apple from unleashing the hounds of Cupertino.

Apple’s claims against Samsung states:

Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products

It’s probably only a matter of time until other lawsuits are shipped out to manufacturers that Apple feels are ripping off their designs. At this point, we’re not sure just how far Apple’s legal team has cast its net on the industry, but you can be sure that this won’t be the last we hear from Apple on this front.

It wouldn’t be the first time that a Samsung product has looked identical to an Apple product. The TouchWiz UI is as close to an iOS clone as we’ve ever seen.

Or, what about the Galaxy Tab keyboard? Does this look familiar?

I dunno. That desktop looks like bog-standard Android fare to me. And even if you could argue that it's similar, it's similar in that both have icons and some sort of bottom-oriented launcher bar. Ie. every OS GUI since 1991. It's just not that innovative.

Hardware-wise, they BOTH look like LCD monitors with kinda-wide bezels and rounded corners. Ie. one of millions of monitors sold around the world.

I don't know why the Apple "design" is so widely lauded when there's nothing new to be seen there. What I like in Apple's marriage of hardware and software is the single context-sensitive button as opposed to the strip of 4 buttons as seen on most current Android devices. But the Tab HAS the 4 buttons.

They keyboard... is rather Apple-like. I don't know if Apple created chiclet-style keys, but they sure popularized them. But IMO that ship has sailed for litigation. They would have had to protect perceived IP long ago against any number of other 3rd-party keyboard manufacturers.

I honestly don't see how Apple can win a case here. Icons and a launch bar aren't unique design features.
