YouTube Flashback: The PowerMac G4 Cube

Back in 2000, Apple announced the PowerMac G4 Cube. TheĀ 8″ x 8″ x 8″ cube, suspended in a 10″ tall Acrylic enclosure, didn’t sell well, and was “put on ice” after a year, but remains a favorite among Macintosh collectors. I acquired one several months ago, and everyone who comes into my office asks about it.

Here’s the video of Uncle Steve announcing the machine:

This is such a beautiful machine but it was so hard to sell. We sold a handful to advertising agencies that wanted it as their reception Mac so it would be the first thing their clients saw when they came in. Other than that it was a tough sell due to the price point. At that time if you were doing a desktop you were either going low end with an iMac or if you needed a bit more power and expandability you were going with the tower. The entry level G4 tower was less than the Cube. This poor little guy didn't really fit in anywhere. When they announced the first MacBook Air I felt like it was another "Cube". Not enough machine to justify that price point. If they would have done with the Cube what they ended up doing with the MacBook Air pricing I think we would have seen this stay around for awhile.
