Everyone’s favorite 3rd-party Gmail client for Mac just got a huge update. It now supports MobileMe and other IMAP accounts. The app also picked up several UI updates — including trackpad gesture support.
Version 1.2 is expected to add support for custom folder mapping and the ability to show favorite folders in the sidebar.
The full feature list for 1.1 is after the jump.

Today was supposed to be a good day for Amazon. They finally launched their much anticipated Appstore for Android in the US after many months of preparation. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by Apple, who has filed a suit for trademark infringement against the internet shopping giant for the use of the term ‘App Store.’ It seems that despite Apple asking Amazon to stop using the name, Amazon has ignored them and launched their very own Amazon Appstore. Apple was granted a trademark for the term App Store in the US recently, though this decision is heavily contested by Microsoft, and a trademark appeal board will soon decide if it’s fair for Apple to trademark the term ‘App Store’

Music recommendations started with mixed tapes for me. Recording a tape from other music collections and passing it on to friends was the best way to share new music. Then came the CD Burner, then Napster, then lawsuits, and now it’s pretty much ‘illegal’ to share anything with anyone in any medium.
But Shazam has taken up the challenge of getting users to share music with friends with their new Shazam Friends feature. Essentially the feature lets users tag songs and then see what their friends on Facebook are tagging. It lets you listen to the tracks that your friends have shared, then purchase the music from iTunes and other music services.
It’s a nifty concept, and it’s something that Ping seems to be struggling with. I enjoy sharing music with my friends, my actual real-life friends who share musical tastes with me. I don’t know anyone in my offline life that has gravitated to Ping, but most of them have Shazam and a Facebook account. Shazam Friends has put my music recommendations in front of the people that care about what I’m listening to, and that can’t be said for a lot of other services that are available today.
The update will be available for iPhone users immediately, and it’ll be available for Android users in the near future. I haven’t been able to get the update from iTunes just yet (US or CDN), but it should be available shortly.
Pretty cool stuff.

Mozilla has finally dropped Firefox 4 into our laps. It’s being pegged as the fastest Firefox yet, and it comes complete with speed and performance enhancements, as well as JavaScript tweaks that should make your web experience snappier than it was before.
According to the official Firefox blog, the browser is six times faster than the previous version, and it has been streamlined to place emphasis on the web instead of the browser.
While the user interface has been streamlined, it does seem like Firefox has taken some design cues from Chrome.
As always, the browser is free, so feel free to go give it a download, and try it out for yourself.

Sales will begin at 5 PM local time.

Today, the China Times is reaffirming a lot of the iPhone 5 rumors we’ve heard over the last month: iPhone 5 will have that iPhone 4 look and feel, but it will come complete with a 4-inch screen, up from the current 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen. It’s also being reported by the Times that the iPhone 5 is on track for a 3rd quarter release sometime between April and June 30th, 2011, and that NFC will be included.

Path is not your average photo sharing app. It is loosely based on the idea of Dunbar’s number, which is the concept that your brain has a limited number of social relationships it’s able to keep up with while maintaining stability. The team at Path chose their limit to be 50. In the app, you’re only able to “share your Path with 50 people and vice versa. This obviously puts a restriction on you as a user to pick the people most important to you. In doing this, Path users tend to share media (video as well as stills) that are more private than they would share with other services like Instagram. Many users share family photos that they wouldn’t otherwise.
