Amazon announces “Cloud Player” music streaming service

Today, Amazon unveiled Cloud Player, a new service that allows users to upload their music to the cloud and stream it to to any computer via the web, or any Android devices.

Existing Amazon customers in the US can now upload their MP3 purchases to their 5GB cloud space. An additional 15 GB for a year is free upon purchase of an album from the Amazon MP3 store. Additional storage is available starting at $20/year.

Songs purchased from iTunes appear to work with the service (as long as they are DRM-free), but there is no iOS app at this time.

Of course, many believe that Amazon is preparing an Android-powered tablet. Between this, the company’s existing suite of content stores and the recently-opened Amazon Android Appstore, it sure feels like the big A is about to have a tablet in the market.

Many also believe that such a system is coming to iTunes and MobileMe in the form of a “Media Locker” in the coming months.
