Cultured Code announces Things Cloud Sync

March 28, 2011

iPad, iPhone, Mac, Misc. News

If you’ve been keeping yourself up to date with the “state of sync” series over at Cultured Code’s Things blog, you can now check out their third installment; they’ve updated their blog.

Long story short, they’re announcing exactly what their syncing service will entail. Things Cloud Sync will exist in the cloud, obviously, and it will be a software upgrade, and free of charge for now. The service may cost you in the future though, so don’t hold your breath.

All changes on one device will immediately sync to the cloud, thereby updating every other installation of Things you have configured:

Things will sync frequently. While there will be a way to initiate sync manually there should hardly be any reason for doing so. Every change you make is transmitted to the cloud almost instantly. No matter when you quit the app, your data is safe with the server already. Whenever you open Things, switch applications, or wake your computer from sleep, Things will check back with the server to see if there are any updates to pull.

The team will be conducting a very select closed beta based on invite. Invitation emails will begin shipping May 2nd, 2011. If you’re interested in testing the new cloud service, you can sign up here.

What do you think? Too little, too late?  Have you moved on to another ToDo application?  Let us know in the comments.

OmniFocus. That is all.

$80 simply to get their software on all platforms and who knows how much sync will cost.

Overpriced.

I'm in the process of evaluating OmniFocus. I love Things and think it's great and I'm concerned about the learning curve on OF – as well as reinvesting the money in a desktop and iOS versions. This is a positive development, but indeed, may be too little too late.

This is way little too late. Cultered Code's beta will break Bonjour Sync, leaving iOS devices in the cold until the cloud sync shows up for them. Also, they have yet to announce pricing for cloud sync, which comes free with lots of other apps.

I switched to OmniFocus months ago and haven't looked back. Things is a great app, but clearly these guys aren't capable of taking it to the next level.
