On again, off again rumors of a new MobileMe are officially on again. This one fails to die, and that’s usually a sign of a semi-legitimate rumor. According to Macstories, there are reports circulating the internet that suggest that we’ll be seeing a new MobileMe launch next month, and it will be free, just as rumored.
Like Federico over at Macstories suggests, there’s a lot of evidence piling up that a new MobileMe is on its way.
Apple’s recently discontinued MobileMe sales in store, instead, opting to point customers to download it from their website. Also, Apple mentioned during their last financial call that the data center was slated to bootup sometime this spring. Many believe that the data center will be used for both current MobileMe applications, as well as some new ones that could include streaming media (audio, video, photos) from computers and iPads across your personal tech arsenal.
Hopefully it turns out to be true. Being a recent convert to MobileMe, I’d have to say that it performs better than other options on the market, but the price tag is a huge deterrent for a lot of people, considering Google offers a lot of similar apps for free.

Actually I think its true... My subscription was due to renew this March and I was not charged and when I looked at my subscription they pushed it up to expire Jun 12, 2011... Why would they not charge me unless they were going free?

LikeI have been a MobileMe subscriber for almost 3 years. Love the service, not the cost. I pay for the family pack ($149) and only get 40GB of space...I also use Google's services (now more than MM) because it works, it's free, and you can buy cheaper upgraded storage. I purchased 400GB for $100 a year.
Now, I have AppleTV, an iMac, a MBP, and an old MB that the wife uses. iTouch, iPhone 3G and 2 iPhone 4s. I dig the Back to My Mac feature as it helps me assist my wife when I'm at work or traveling. I would like to see the MM sub go free and have the same purchased for additional space. Don't charge for features, only give so much free space (5-8 GB would be enough for most). I would give up my Google services, even though I have been using them more frequently (read multiple times a day) than I use Mobile Me.
*EDIT: Google services minus my Google Voice. I love that shhhhh

LikeFigures I just paid for a mobile me subscription in December. Oh well. Hope whatever they do it works well.

LikeI hope there's more additions than changes. I'm just getting used to the updated MobileMe now. Also, free is good.

LikeMy money is on additions. I don't see them changing up the current apps too much, with the obvious exception of iDisk. I really, really hope they take the Dropbox approach.

LikeNo, please not.
They should make some parts of it free, if they absolutely have to, but not the whole package.
I'm using it exactly because they charge for it; thus continuously improving it and offering good customer service for it.
If I wanted piss-poor to no service and half-baked features, I'd use Google.

LikeThat might not be a bad idea. What if MobileMe as we know it now is free, but the additional apps are a paid for service? Like streaming audio, video, pictures, etc?
Would that be worth it? I think it might be.

LikeI chose MobileMe because I wanted to publish a simple travel blog, needed an IMAP-sporting email account and wanted to sync my Mac's and — at that time — iPod Touch's PIM data.
The following represents my hopes for the service should there be plans to change its business model:
Offer a rudimentary version of MobileMe for free:
* Find my iOS something
* Simple PIM functionality, no device sync
* MobileMe gallery
All the other features including email should stay paid services for the sake of quality and customer support.

LikeConsidering it takes me a full hour to restore from backup on my iPhone I was really hoping that we would see some of that thunderbolt on the iPad 2.
I have a podcast that I pay for that I can only download through iTunes on my Mac, I hate having to find a wire to transfer it to my iPhone so I can listen in my car. It would just be nice to be able to do this tiny bits of data OTA. Or just have it sync music I bought on my iPhone to my Mac for a backup without my wire.

LikeI totally get what you are saying. The main thing I would want is over the air sync, since it's bundled into mobileme right now I don't think they will offer it to everyone unless something changes in the MM model.

LikeOTA Syncing would be fantastic. I hate having to tether my device to grab music, and stuff like that. If I had my way, Home Sharing on the iPhone/iPad would work just like Home Sharing in iTunes.

LikeSeriously, how can it be called home sharing if it's not real home sharing? I have disappoint.

LikeScrew OTA synchronisation, just give me Thunderbolt, heck I'd even welcome FW400 back if it meant faster sync times :)
