Adobe releases Flash-to-HTML5 conversion tool on Adobe Labs

Flash developers may have a little extra bounce in their step today. They might not be hovering around town, but they’re certainly feeling a little bit better about the future of Flash on HTML 5 based devices. Adobe has launched Wallaby, an application that lets users partially convert Flash to HTML5 with a push of a button.

Wallaby, an Adobe AIR application, will be able turn most parts of Flash projects into HTML, SVG, and CSS files so that the project will work on devices like the iPad; however, there are some caveats to the release. Blend modes, filters, audio, video, and ActionScript aren’t translated by the application to HTML5 equivalents, and instead are being discarded during the process.

While Wallaby may not be a panacea just yet, this seems to be a great first step towards bridging the gap between Flash and HTML5.

Wallaby will be available on the Adobe Labs website starting today, and Adobe is hoping that the release will help them refine their product, and determine whether or not they should be bringing the translation tool to Flash Professional permanently.
