According to a new report over at BGR, new MacBook Pros — with a whole new storage system — are right around the corner:
… we have been told the OS on the laptops will be loaded to a separate (internal) 8-16GB SSD while everything else will remain on the regular hard drive. There will be options for just SSD drives but the base models will feature regular hard disks with the SSD combo for the OS.
With SSD still too expensive to meet the needs of MacBook Pro owners, a hybrid system like this makes sense. A hybrid system would give users the benefits of SSD — fast boot, fast sleep, etc. — with the large, cheap storage afforded by traditional spinning hard drives.
I think a two volume system would be confusing for some users, though. If a hybrid system is in the works, I’m sure it will be elegant and simple in Finder. That’s what Apple does best, after all.
Editor’s Note: Josh talked about a hybrid SSD/HDD option on The Bro Show, as well as the latest edition of the Macgasm Podcast. You can hear his thoughts on those by clicking on either of those links.
Some people collect Apple products. I’m not one of them. I prefer throwing things out. I purge, and purge, and purge some more. But, I know at least one of our writers has a giant collection of Apple computers going, and he’s clearly not alone with his Apple collection. Some people collect Apple products, and these cards would make a great edition to any Apple collector’s collection of goods.
Macgasm would love to help you see how you’re wasting your life. This may be the most depressing app I have, but I love it. Wasted Life lets you put in the number of hours you spend doing things, and it calculates how much of your life you will waste doing them.
I live in a small apartment, and desk space and table space is at a premium. Currently, I’ve been putting three audio docks through the paces (Audyssey, Sonos S5, and Bose SoundDock), but I’m running out of places to put things. All three of those docks sit on a tabletop, and frankly, I’m out of space. I could probably argue that most of you see yourselves in the same position. It’s for this reason that I’m excited about the WALdok. This particular Kickstarter project aims to put a dock in every room with a power outlet.
Light Peak, the next-gen, super-fast, magic-like data connection from Intel is rumored to end up in a Mac at some point in the future.
Apple has partnered with Intel on Light Peak, helping create a standard that will blow USB and FireWire out of the water in terms of flexibility and raw speed.
A new rumor out yesterday suggests that the long-awaited iPad 2 could be equipped with a Light Peak connector, bringing the new technology to the masses.
The closer we get to iPad 2 release day, the more product leaks we’re going to see. MIC Gadget has been on top of case leaks this year, and they’ve stumbled across another one that may confirm rumors that a camera is being built into the iPad 2. (more…)
This isn’t really Mac-specific per se, but it certainly rings true on a lot of levels for most of us Mac users, and geeks for that matter. This pretty much sums up my typical day writing for this website, so I thought I’d pass it along. There have been a number of times that my multi-tasking has gotten so out of hand that my brain resets, and I completely forget what I was doing in the first place. I just sit and stare at the screen, hoping that I remember what I was doing.
Is there a Technology Anonymous we could sign up for? I wouldn’t mind some MiND-Fi though.
Google has added the ability to preview additional files within Google Docs. Among the list of new file types is Apple Pages. What does this mean? Well, it means that you’re able to have somebody send an Apple Pages file, upload it to Google Docs and view it, even if you’re on a non-Apple device.
Once you upload the file you’ll be able to see a preview of the document including colors, images, font-sizes, tables, charts, and even shapes.
