NY Times: No small iPhone anytime soon

According to an article over at the New York Times, the rumors about a smaller iPhone may not be quite right:

Apple’s engineers are currently focused on finishing the next version of the iPhone, which is likely to be similar in size to the current iPhone 4, said one of the people. The person said Apple was not planning to introduce a smaller iPhone any time soon. Analysts expect the new iPhone to be ready this summer.

Another person who is in direct contact with Apple also said that the company would not make a smaller iPhone at this time, in part because a smaller device would not necessarily be much cheaper to manufacture and because it would be more difficult to operate.

Coupled with the rumors about a larger iPhone on the horizons as well, the only thing that is clear at this point is that there is a new iPhone on the way.

My gut says that the iPhone 5 will sport the same 3.5-inch screen that every model of iPhone has sported so far. Unless Apple can get different sized displays to show the same number of pixels at the same density that the iPhone currently shows, physical changes may create nightmares for developers. With the Retina Display, Apple was able to gracefully move developers to the higher pixel density. I don’t think the company is going to do anything to jeopardize that.

Apple Store employee spills the beans to Popular MechanicsWe’ve had a few former Apple Store employees write for this website, so we know full well what trials are associated with working at an Apple Store. We’ve also heard a lot of mixed reviews from people. Some people absolutely love the gig, and others despise it. I guess it comes down to what type of person you are, and whether or not you’re cut out for retail.

According to an anonymous Apple Store employee who decided to spill the beans to Popular Mechanics today, the gig has its positives and negatives.

YouTube Flashback: The switch to Intel

In 2004 and the first half of 2005, the Internet was swirling with rumors that Apple would move to Intel processors to power its Mac line, due to speed and heat issues with IBM’s PowerPC chips, which had powered the Mac for years

At WWDC 2005, the company took the wraps off of its plan, which included a “Developer Transition Kit” that allowed developers to test their code on an Intel machine.

Apple also announced “Rosetta,” a software layer that allowed most PPC-based applications to run on Intel Macs seamlessly and quickly.

At Macworld in 2006 — just six months later — Apple introduced the Intel iMac and the MacBook Pro. The entire product line was moved to Intel processors in a mere 14 months after the announcement.

Here’s the video:

Microsoft Windows Phone Connector goes gold

I know this software will only be needed for less than 10 percent of the Mac owning universe, but Microsoft has released their Windows Phone 7 connector for Mac. The software allows those Windows Phone 7 users who also own Macs to sync their music, photos, and applications to their Windows Phone 7.

Incase Alloy Collection: A backpack for the digital age

Incase Alloy Collection: A backpack for the digital ageIn 2011, people no longer cart books to and fro; instead, they need to transport iPads, iPhones, MacBook Airs, cameras, power adapters, and anything else that runs on batteries. I once spent a two-week period backpacking around Prague and Venice, and during that time my MacBook Pro was mangled, dinged, dented, and beaten to a pulp.  Most backpacks aren’t designed for today’s needs, but that’s where the Alloy Collection differs.

Plants Vs. Zombies makes its way to the Mac App Store

Plants Vs. Zombies makes its way to the Mac App StorePlants Vs. Zombies has just popped up on the Mac App Store. This marks a pretty big day for me. All of my favorite “indie” Mac games have officially come to the Mac App Store (Braid, Trine, The Incident, etc), and now Plants Vs. Zombies has joined them.

Now that I think about it, there’s more and more reason for me to head to the Mac App Store first when looking for software. I always had a feeling the Mac App Store would be huge, but I didn’t think developers would jump at the opportunity this quickly.
