Rumor: iPad 2 might be a spec bump, like we suggested

February 25, 2011

iPad, Rumors

With the iPad 2 announcement just around the corner, a lot of people are wondering what we might see in the new device. Early on, Engadget had a large list of updates that they believed Apple would bring to the device, but now they’re reeling it in a little bit. According to Engadget’s recent sources, the iPad 2 will only have a slight spec bump, and we might see a front-facing camera.

According to Topolsky,

We’re hearing it’s most likely a thinner, spec-bumped variation of the original iPad with a screen size and resolution identical to the current model. More RAM (512MB) and a more powerful CPU (the A5)

There have been a lot of suggestions leading up to the iPad 2 announcement that this edition would be a spec update more than anything else. This has been on my mind since earlier this month when I wrote about the iPad already being in production. In that article I suggested, “we’re going to see more of a specification “bump” than we are a brand new iPad. Think more like the recent iPod touch update than an iPhone 4 update.”  At the time it was just me prognosticating, but the more I hear about what may be coming next week at the media event, the more I feel like this is what’s going to happen.

What do you think? Is Apple going to be releasing a completely reworked iPad or is the iPad 2 just getting some spec updates? Let us know in the comments.

I believe it will be an upgrade much like the MacBook Pro just got i.e more internal than external spec modifications. If you look at the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 there is not a lot of difference either imo. Once the 4G network is up and running only then will we see significant changes to the apple products line up.

Reworked? Hardly. There wasn't so much time to do it (to get responses and accordingly add them to iPad)... I believe it will be what Engadget says + FaceTime camera (if they are not mentioning it).
