Apple may have a giant head start until 2012 with Thunderbolt

Apple’s announcement of Thunderbolt today during their press conference is no longer major news, but Apple may have a year-long head start with the new technology according to Intel.

While Intel admitted that Apple doesn’t have exclusivity with the technology currently, they did say that they didn’t expect other manufacturers to jump on the technology until 2012. According to Electronista, other developers won’t “get the kit for Thunderbolt until the spring, giving Apple at least several months’ lead time.”

While I don’t personally think many people are going to be running out to buy the Thunderbolt based laptops, outside of prosumers and professionals, Apple obviously holds an advantage when it comes to speed right now.

When we partner Thunderbolt with the rumors that Apple may be releasing a major Final Cut update sometime around the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference, it sounds like Apple’s digging its heels into the professional marketplace again. Either way, moving files just got a lot snappier in the new MacBook Pro lineup. We can’t complain one bit about news like that.
