The iPod classic has been around since the inception of the iPod. Granted there was a name change back in 2007 from just iPod. There are now rumors that the classic has very low supplies, potentially suggesting that the next generation of this device may be on its way.
The iPod Classic uses a 1.8-inch hard drive. Over the years, the capacity has increased steadily to its current 160GB. The last update to the iPod Classic was in 2009, which is when the 160GB hard drive was added. As AppleBitch’s article points out, Toshiba did introduce a 220GB, 1.8-inch hard drive a couple weeks back. It’s possible that this new hard drive has prompted the update, allowing the iPod classic to yet again up its storage space, although this is just speculation at this point.
The only model affected by this ‘low’ supply is the silver model. The carbon-colored model is still shipping within 24-hours according to Apple’s store.
I wouldn’t doubt that Apple is preparing a refresh to the iPod classic. An update to the iPod classic is overdue. We’ll keep watch and see what Apple does decide to do with the iPod classic. They may update it, or maybe they’ll just eliminate it altogether. We’ll find out soon enough.
