Rumor: Verizon iPhone announcement on January 11, 2011

Apple’s back in the news again: Verizon has sent out invitations to an upcoming “announcement.” The event is scheduled for for Tuesday, January 11, 2011, and it will take place at the Lincoln Center in New York City.

No one knows for sure what the event is concerning, but it hasn’t stopped everyone from publicly wondering if this event is to announce iPhone availability on the Verizon network. A lot of big name consumer electronics reporters are at odds with each other on this: Jim Dalrymple (The Loop) thinks it’s iPhone related, but Joshua Topolsky (Engadget) seems to be a little bit skeptical.

If the announcement is iPhone-related, it would mark a major step away from the traditional announcements that take place on Apple’s campus, or in San Francisco. It would also be the first major announcement that someone else was lining up.  Steve Jobs may or may not be in New York, but as it stands, this is a Verizon announcement not an Apple one.  Personally, if Verizon was going to be announcing iPhone availability on their network, I don’t really see Apple playing a major role in the event.

So we’re left guessing, and no one knows for sure, but a lot of respected people in the industry clearly think this might be the big day for the iPhone on the Verizon network. Frankly I hope that it is, because all of this iPhone on Verizon news is starting to get super lame.
