Offical: Mac App Store opens January 6, 2011

Apple’s finally opening the doors to the Mac App Store. The big day is January 6th. Apple will be opening the new App Store in 90 countries, and the store will feature the same categories found in the iOS App Store (Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity, and Utilities).

Apple will be placing emphasis on using the Mac App Store to download your desktop applications; however, it will not be the only source for Mac applications. Users are still free to download and install applications in any way they feel comfortable with.

Apple’s suggesting that developers get their apps into the review queue by December 31 if they want to be included on release day.

The Mac App Store is going to be a great way to kick off the new year.
