Apple buys bluetooth headphone designer

Apple bought up Wi-Gear, a San Francisco based Bluetooth headphone designer, for an undisclosed amount two months ago. Michael Kim, co-founder of Wi-Gear, is now an iOS Bluetooth Engineer at Apple.

Wi-Gear has even gone so far as to “cease” operations of their business, and in typical acquisition fashion, they have refused to respond to inquiries. The Wi-Gear team, solely focused on iOS devices and bringing stereo Bluetooth headphones to the iPhone, now has a part to play at Apple Inc.

Wi-Gear managed to create three generations of their headphones as well as an adapter for old iPhones and iPods that didn’t support Bluetooth 2.0. Apple may have just killed off the CD-Rom and traditional SATA harddrives in the MacBook Air, but now they might be killing off wired headphones entirely.

This could be a move to create new headphones, or shore up some talent to create better bluetooth headsets for the iPhone. Only time will tell.
