Steve Jobs: We dont see USB 3 taking off at this time

Gizmodo reported on October 29 that Apple CEO Steve Jobs took a decided stance on the use of USB 3.0 in Macintosh computers.

Via a story from 9 to 5 Mac, reader Tom Kruk emailed the Apple exec inquiring why USB 3.0 is not available in the Macintosh.

Jobs replied, in one of his characteristic short, to-the-point emails:

“We don’t see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example.”

Provided that Jobs’ response is authentic, Apple users now have a reason as to why the much-faster USB 3.0 technology has yet to be implemented in the Macintosh line. As with other hardware Apple has used/disposed of in the past (the floppy disk, FireWire, CD drives in MacBook Airs), it would be safe to assume that USB 3.0 will eventually make its debut.

Although it’s disappointing that USB 3.0 is not yet available, the situation appears to be easily remedied by more global support of the technology. Jobs is citing Intel’s lack of support for the reason USB 2.0 is still being used in the Macintosh.

So, who wants to start a letter-writing campaign to Intel requesting USB 3.0? Leave your suggestions in the comments!

This sounds like a truthful answer Steve would give. People may be all up and arms about why the newest Mac's don't have USB 3 just like they don't have Blu-Ray. When Steve says we don't think it's taking off yet, means it's not a viable solution for our customers and our profit margins.

Apple is quick to adopt new technologies because they make sense on many levels for their products. They don't adopt new technologies just because it's new.

I think USB 3 will come to Macs when their a demand. When reasonably priced external HHD's come with USB 3. Or when Apple see's that USB 3 would be great for iOS device media syncing.

Blu-Ray however may never come to the Mac. Apple's betting on HD streaming and downloads to be the horse to win the long term race.

Do you think this might have something to do with lightpeak shipping shortly?

Could be. I'd love to see it become a reality on the Mac.

Definitely it's due to Lightpeak. Apple is content to wait things out until the next thing comes out, and is happy to leapfrog the competition when it's ready.

And we all know that history repeats itself!
