Nintendo worried about Apple

Nintendo worried about AppleThe iPhone and iPod Touch are the world’s best selling gaming devices, according to Jobs. When people talk like that, the competition takes notice, and in this case Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime could probably see the grenade heading his way, tossed by Jobs himself, during the last keynote. According to Forbes, Fils-Aime knows full well that they’re competing with Apple. “Do I think that in the near term they can hurt us more than Microsoft?” Fils-Aime says. “Absolutely.” He also goes on to say that Apple is a bigger threat than Microsoft and Sony at this point.

So there you have it, straight from the mouth of a Nintendo Executive. But, he doesn’t end there, and starts to blow it right when he points out that the iPhone and iPod Touch games are for “casual” gamers, whereas the Nintendo DS isn’t. That’s right about when he lost us.

The Nintendo DS and the Wii are very much aimed at the same market as the iPhone, iPod Touch, and now iPad. Just when we thought this guy knew what he was talking about, he illustrates that he’s out of touch with his own market. Maybe someone should show Fils-Aime the Civ Revolutions game (or iPad version), Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown (iPad version), or Field Runners. I’ve sunk a lot of time into all of those games.

Someone should also show him the list of companies working on developing games for iOS, because we’re pretty sure some heavyweights, like Epic, will be creating content in the near future.

I guess Fils-Aime is right in a sense. They should be worried about Apple, but before they start addressing the problem they face at Nintendo, he might want to get his eyes checked. Pretty soon iOS games will be eating DS games for lunch if they aren’t careful.

Nokia is the largest producer of mp3 players and cameras in the world, due to their cellphones having these functions built in. Yet people are still buying iPods and Kodak cameras.
The same will be with this, people will be playing games on the iPhone AND the DS (or 3DS), Nintendo just has to work on value for money.

One key difference is the process that Nintendo developers experience when developing and selling product for Nintendo devices, compared with the experience developers get from Apple via the Apple iOS developer program and the Apple App Store.

The Nintendo DS is a gaming device that is aimed at casual gamers. I think he knew that, but for the purpose of putting down Apple, stated otherwise.
The iPod Touch and iPhone are not gaming devices. They are devices which happen to play games. However, their gaming aspect is focused on casual gamers. If you could honestly give me a list of iPhone games that can compare with the hardcore library of the PSP (Eg. Metal Gear Solid, Fat Princess, Resistance, Ratchet And Clank, Monster Hunter, God Of War, LocoRoco...) then I'd be very surprised. The PSP is aimed at hardcore market, and is not in direct competition with Apple.

The DS is in direct competition to Apple, as they are both aimed at casual gamers. Apple is winning though, because casual gamers are more willing to spend £1 on a game than £29.99 on a game.
