iPad lock to become a mute button again, instead of orientation lock

iPad lock to become a mute button again, instead of orientation lock

We’ve been testing the latest beta of iOS 4.2 for a while, and one of the things that stands out, and that continues to be pretty annoying is the orientation lock, or lack thereof, in iOS 4.2 beta 3.

If you’ve grown accustomed to flicking the switch to lock the screen, you’re going to be pretty annoyed when iOS 4.2 launches next month. Apple plans on leaving the switch as a mute button.

According to another vague email from Jobs, it’s pretty clear that they intend on leaving it as a volume mute switch, which has to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. It’s not stupid because the iPad needs a mute switch. It’s stupid because the iPad already has a mute switch: it’s called holding down the lower volume button on the volume rocker. The volume drops from one bar to mute in a split second.

How many steps is it going to take to switch the screen orientation? Five. You’ll have to double click the home button to bring up the multi-tasking menu, then swipe (left to right) to bring up the controls, then unclick the orientation lock, then flip the device, then re-click the orientation lock to lock it.

How many steps is it currently? Three. You flip the switch, flip the device, and flip the switch again. You tell me which one makes more sense?

If you’re expecting Apple to make it an option you can control, you’re kidding yourself. Steve Jobs also answered that question with a resounding “Nope.”

U can stil lock your ipad fellas.... Double click the home button which enables the mulitasking bar, then in the begining of that bar, there is a lock key.. U can lock it...

I wanted to throw my ipad too! Glad I found you!

The decision to take away the screen lock orientation button and reassign it's function to a mute button is a horrible idea. What research data did they access to even suggest that we (loyal iPad owners and Apples' BEST sales force by the way) desired this? Considering the fact that we can mute the device easily enough with the volume rocker switch, or if a video is running, we can just as easily swipe the volume down or hit the mute button on the video screen, this "upgrade" does not make any sense, is annoying and takes away one of the best features of the unit when used in iBooks mode. A perplexing decison to say the least. It must have been championed by some pasty computer geek high up on the food chain at Apple who could not STAND the loud music played by the cool kids while he feverishly rubbed his slide rule!

Oh, my God. The funniest place for this to happen -at the gate at the airport. It needs to orient so the bar code is on the narrow side so it can scan. I kept trying to lock, and then lock again...the flight of course is 3hours late and everyone behind me is p.o.ed.

Thanks for the article. So relieved I am not insane....

Stupid change, I need screen lock much more than mute, and mute works already with the volume rocker.

Why makes life miserable? What is Steve Jobs trying to proof?

it s the most annoying thing ever... i'm thinking of jailbraking my device only to get the physical orientation switch back, even if it voids my warranty... it's been a week since i updated and i thought i would get used to it by now... but nooo,it is getting more and more annoying... i leave it unlocked sometimes just because i hate double-clicking sliding unlocking reorienting locking again, taping to get back to what i was doing, i hate stopping in the middle of a movie or reading a book or otherwise to do these things...you would think they would give you a choice,an option to choose what suites you best, but "nope"... APPLE BAD F>>>ING IDEA

Changing the orientation lock button to mute button is the most stupidiest thing ever!!! It's annoying!

Annoying when watching movies in bed. I miss the physical switch. Thanks for the tip.

After wanting to toss my IPad across the room because I could no longer lock it. I thank you and my husband thanks you for this information. What a dumb idea. Oh Apple why do you want to lose customers. ?

No problem! Glad we could help.

This is amazing!!!! I would prefer this to an orientation lock!!! Bring on 4.2

I'm tired of these articles that get written on the back of a supposed "Steve Jobs" email. Some of these supposed emails, seem ridiculous and banal at best.

I find it unlikely he would be commenting on the features during a Beta cycle.
Let's just wait until 4.2 comes out and see what happens.

Beta cycles are for trying out features - nothing is set until GM.

This is crazy annoying. While it's not that big of a deal to jump into the App Switcher to lock the orientation, it made a lot more sense to have it as a physical switch.
