Three awesome things about iTunes 10

By this point you’re probably well aware of the problems associated with iTunes 10. They’re plentiful, but there’s also a lot of really good things about the update that no one’s talking about. Here are a couple of things that we thought were worth pointing out.

iTunes1 300x281 Three awesome things about iTunes 10Album Artwork Widget

A lot of people spend money on glorified iTunes plugins that show album artwork on their desktop complete with controls to change tracks, etc. You no longer have to. Apple’s built one right into iTunes 10. Double click on the album artwork so that it opens the artwork in a new window. Now mouse over the window, and voilà, a miniature iTunes player appears that displays your artwork instead of the traditional miniature iTunes player.

iTunes11 300x215 Three awesome things about iTunes 10Step indicator when you Sync

Having no idea where your iPhone or iPad sync is at is a major downer. There’s been numerous times where I’d be waiting at my desk, hoping that my sync would finish up so I can hit the road to a meeting. I’d have no idea how much more time was left in my sync, and what steps were left until I was done. In iTunes 10 you can now see what step your device is at in the sync process. You’ll now know if you’re going to be late for your meeting, or if your iPad will be finished up in time. Handy.

iTunes12 300x235 Three awesome things about iTunes 10The hidden hide button

There’s been a lot of complaining about the missing triangle buttons in the iTunes sidebar. You know the ones. They would let you expand and contract certain things, like your devices, playlists, etc. The functionality is still there, it’s just that you can’t see it.

If you mouse over one of the sidebar section titles you’ll notice that a “hide” button pops up. Click it, and the section is minimized. Click it again, and it expands.  Less is more.

iTunes 10 thoughts

No one likes change, and any time you take drastic measures in reworking an application people are going to notice the negatives before they notice the positives. It’s human nature, and everyone’s a critic these days.

What I like about this update is the same thing I liked about the WordPress 3.0 update. Apple wasn’t afraid to turn things on its head, hoping that it would provide a better experience. Clearly Apple’s trying to place emphasis on the music again, instead of the application. Frankly, I don’t care how the program looks, as long as it gives my music the best emphasis it can. Removing a thing like color from the sidebars is a noticeable change, but I shouldn’t be noticing the nice color buttons. I should be noticing awesome album artwork for my favourite music. iTunes is now more about the music, and that’s just fine with me.

Thanks for the heads up on the mini player, I couldn’t figure out why they’d give that up, much better idea now that I know!

No prob. Just to clarify, the other mini player is still there, so you now have two options for a mini player. ;)

You’re right, I skimmed over it last night & must have forgot because what happened was it stopped playing my preview of songs when I went into mini player mode, sorry about that

Whaaaaaaat? I was looking forward to updating iTunes to 10 but it looks like Apple isn’t supporting updates for Tiger. :(

I guess its time for me to finally upgrade from 10.4.

    • http://www.macgasm.net Joshua Schnell

Woah, out of curiosity, what was holding you back from updating?

      • http://www.degainedesigns.com Zane

Mainly the fact that Tiger works just fine, except now I’ve missed out on a security update or whatever and now iTunes 10.

I’m not real tech-minded and a friend said that my MacBook (black plastic model) might not be able to handle snow leopard. I haven’t really looked into it, though.

        • http://www.macgasm.net Joshua Schnell

This is going back a while now, but Snow Leopard substantially increased the speed of one of my older machines.

Huh. That’d be awesome. I’ll have to look into it. Thanks.

The ability to select specific albums to sync with your device seems new … unfortunately the ability to search and quickly find artists, songs and now albums to sync seems to have disappeared. Or am I just missing it?

These things are great, but I would quickly give them up if itunes 10 will let me sync my dang ipod! I cannot sync because of “unknown errors!” I looked up these errors and it told me to remove the “corrupted files.” Why weren’t these files corrupted on all of the other itunes versions? Why does this version of itunes consider them corrupt?

I like change. I like progress, but this is not progress. This is getting me nowhere. And if you are to look at the Apple forums, I’m not the only one. So far, there is no answer to this yet. I’ve scheduled a Genius Bar appointment. I’ve been treated terribly by Apple so far, so I won’t be surprised if it continues at the appointment. Well, I will not leave until they fix the issue. There HAS to be a way.

My opinion: don’t get itunes 10. I run Windows 7. It might run differently on other OS’s, but it’s not worth the risk.

im having the same issue as you are and ive been fighting with itunes trying to figure it out….it even erased all of my music but says that it is there. when i finally got the system to sync it goes all the way to finishing sync but wont finish and Itunes 10 goes into a not responding status…..UGH this is sooo frustrating

i need to upgrade to Itunes 10 in order to copy music and photos to my new ipad. to do this I have to back up my hard drive and wipe it clean. then install snow leopard. apparently, I have to buy the $200 box set since I have Tiger. the $29 snow leopard upgrade is possible, but is against the law…there has to be a workaround to get Itunes 10 to work with my 10.4.11 intel mac (3.5 yrs old) and to go to all this trouble and itunes 10 doesn’t work…i would be pissed !!

Typical Apple software, poorly written. Still after numerous updates iTunes hangs for 2 hours before I can use it. Why does Apple not acknowledge the issues it is having. Just like the iPhone did it not acknowledge that there was a problem until all the media in world was reporting it. Apple just believes its own hype.
