It’s unknown, but it’s running iOS 4.1

Its unknown, but its running iOS 4.1This is my favourite kind of rumour, one of pure speculation. It lets me make up crazy stuff about whatever I want, and no one can be the wiser. No, really. If you ever want to know what it’s like tracking down rumours, this type of news typifies the experience — lot of noise, and a lot of uncertainty. That’s why we thought we’d pass this little bit of “barely news” news to you.

Here’s the “facts”, according to 9 to 5 Mac. An unknown device has been found in a configuration file referencing an unknown device running iOS 4.1. It’s made by Apple Inc., but no one has any idea what it might be. It could be a new iPod Touch, another iPad, the AppleTV, an iMac, a fancy car. Who the hell knows.

So instead of us pretending, much like the other sites, that we know what’s going to be released, we thought we’d put it in a question to you: What’s Apple putting iOS on now?

My guess, the AppleTV, but that’s all it is — a guess.

With you on iTV.. I could see iOS being combined with OS X so you could have the best of both worlds, touch screen plus additional input devices as well as being able to do traditional apps and an App store for desktop. Do you know how bad I want the ease of updates that he app store brings? Plus being able to find apps easily and being able to better showcase these developers. There's so much out there that you just can't keep track of it all.

I'd love an AppStore for the desktop. As a consumer, I absolutely hate having to manually update all my software packages. Apps like AppFresh just don't seem to be working. That being said, I can see why developers are reluctant to give Apple a slice of revenue for the luxury of being included in a curated store.

Man, an iTV that runs 1080p apps would be a dream come true. I'd immediately retire my MacMini media center machine, and pick one up.

I'd love to see an AppStore for the desktop as well. I'd also love to see them do away with the widgets in the Dashboard and convert the Dashboard into iOS for OS X for desktops. Not a single combined OS, but rather the Dashboard running iOS and all of the apps instead of widgets (which I haven't used in like a year or more).

Don't you mean iToaster?

Yes, must have been a typo. :)
