iLife 09 is getting a little bit long in the tooth, and we’d fully expect an update sooner rather than later. Apparently we’re not the only ones either. Amazon UK has posted up a place holder page for iLife ’10 Pour Les Nuls (For Dummies). The page doesn’t have much information about what to expect, but the product details does point out that the publication date is September 23, 2010.

I did a quick check of Wiley’s Fall Catalogue; there’s no English version of this For Dummies book, but there are portable genius books coming for both iLife and iPhoto. Problem is, there’s no mention of them being for iLife 10 or iPhoto 10.

Apple has traditionally held “Special Events” in September that focus on iPods and other software innovations, so the rumoured shipping date for the “For Dummies” book coincides with Apple announcements.

FileMaker Go coming today

filemakergo 100719 1 500x243 FileMaker Go coming today

If you spend any time in Filemaker at all, you’ll probably be relieved to know that Apple’s subsidiary is bringing some functionality to the iPhone and iPad, in much the same way that they have with their Bento lineup.

You’ll be able to connect directly to FileMaker Server over WiFi or 3G, edit, search, and view your records within a database. The server will be updated on the fly while you’re on the “Go.”

The application is expected to come in at $25 for the iPhone and $50 for the iPad. Also, you’ll have to be running iOS4 on your iPhone if you’re planning on running the application on your device. It seems to be the first major application that will require iOS4 to run, which is a little bit disconcerting, considering the current instability of running iOS4 on the iPod Touch and iPhone 3G. While I get that it’s the cost of innovation, it certainly sucks for those of us still stuck in a contract with 3G phones.

MacPaint now in the Computer History Museum

July 20, 2010

MacpaintWP 300x200 MacPaint now in the Computer History MuseumIt’s not too often that a piece of software is regarded as being “the best program ever written,” but Don Knuth believed that MacPaint was fitting for the title back in January 2004. While the claim is obviously open to debate, programmers everywhere can attest that studying the source code for MacPaint would be beneficial.

The consensus is that the software bundle was one of the most efficient software packages ever created because it was so cutting-edge that it required optimization to even run. It pushed the boundaries so far that it revealed bugs in the operating system, because it operated on the edge of available memory.

It took approximately twenty-four man years to create MacPaint.

It’s taken over five years, and a personal request to Steve Jobs to get the application donated to the Computer History Museum, but it’s finally happened. You can now download the source code and examine the assembly code, if that’s your kind of thing.

iPad to be available in nine more countries

July 20, 2010

There are some among the Apple community who live outside of the countries that can currently get the iPad without having to pay a premium and acquire the device on the grey market. Well the grey market sector is about to get a bit smaller and the countries that are able to get the device locally is expanding.

On Friday, July 23rd, Apple announced that the following countries will be able to get one of these specially crafted ‘magical’ devices: Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore.

That’s right, the iPad. With the addition of these nine countries, the number of countries with the iPad is doubled to eighteen total. This will probably drop the grey market in these areas to almost non-existent, except when initial supplies run out.

One thing Apple did not let anybody know about is the pricing for these countries. My guess is that this will come tomorrow (Tuesday) with the Apple store being down for it’s somewhat regular Tuesday updates.

Apple users who wish to grab their own iPad in these countries can do so at their local Apple store or Authorized Apple Reseller. Apple does acknowledge that additional countries will be added later this year and pricing for those countries will be announced later as well. So if you’re still in an area that does not have the iPad, you can wait or attempt to get one on the grey market for a premium.

Apple to charge for iOS4 for iPad?

July 20, 2010

Just when we thought Apple had done away with charging for their iOS updates after revealing that iOS4 was free even for iPod Touch owners, a big fat rumour has been passed to Stuff.tv from a developer working on a future iPad app that the update will now be forcing our hands into our pockets for it, just like the old days.

Stuff.tv contacted Apple over the matter, and as expected received a ‘no comment’ as a response. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this if it’s true. I bought my iPad thinking that the update would be free. I know I wasn’t led to believe it would be free, but just the price of the device made me think this.

I’ve been looking forward to it ever since buying the iPad, and even more since buying the iPhone 4 and using multitasking. Being a paid update won’t make me not update it though. I’ll just be doing it with a bit of a grudge towards Apple for a while.

What do you think of this, and how much do you think Apple would charge if it end up being true?
