Apple’s putting the cellphone industry to shame

July 23, 2010

cellphone profits 300x256 Apples putting the cellphone industry to shameWe had some idea just how successful Apple’s been with their iPhone, but we never really took the moment needed to fully appreciate just how much they’ve obliterated the industry. Say what you will about the iPhone, it’s still pretty amazing just how fast they were able to not only bring a competitor to market, but also redefine the industry. Talk about striking gold.

From 2007 until present, Apple has not only caught up with the entire industry, they’ve surpassed them entirely, according to Goldman Sachs. Now, I might be reading the graph wrong, but it seems that since Apple’s entered the market they’ve managed to capture half of the existing market, as well as a large slice of the expanded market. No wonder RIM, Nokia, and the rest of the cellular industry players are so pissed that Apple pointed out their shortcomings after Antennagate. It’s like the new kid at school getting all the hot girls, and then when the same girls start figuring out that the new kid has problems, the new kid turns around and points out how big of a loser the other kids still are.

I’d be pissed too.

If you can’t laugh, you cry: CollegeHumor spoofs Stevenote

July 23, 2010

I know I said we wouldn’t be talking about Antennagate anymore, but this parody video is too funny to pass up. The CollegeHumor gang has decided to comment satirically on the iPhone 4 Antennagate feud by recreating the Stevenote in a way that makes Steve look like a complete badass.

We don’t agree with the Bumper giveaway, or half the whining that’s gone on, and it seems like this parallel universe Steve didn’t either. I probably would have cheered if Steve Jobs actually came out on stage and said this to the crowd. Sure, it would have been a terrible PR move, but it certainly would have had the bloggers crapping their pants, especially the part where Steve goes all Rocky on a blogger.

In-wall iPhone mount for your home theatre

iPort 300x255 In wall iPhone mount for your home theatreIf you’re the type of person that likes keeping things off the surfaces around your house, then you might be looking for an iPhone wall mount that connects to your home audio and video systems.

Given the size of the media library we’re carrying around in our pockets these days, it sure would be nice to be able to come home, plug your iPhone into the wall, and get that content streaming directly to your speakers and television.

The iPort has you covered. It’s not cheap by any means, and would require some rewiring, but if you’ve got the cash, it’ll be worth it. If your house is fully wired already, you’ll have the ability to control the device from around your house. If there’s one thing I’d love, it would be the ability to control my music from anywhere in the house. The iPort starts at about $200.00.

The iPort syncs with iTunes, charges your phone, and lets you play music on your home stereo system.  If you ask me, the $200.00 is worth it.

Here’s the wiring configuration

Hoping for a white iPhone? You’re gonna be waiting a while

whiteiphone notavailable ars 300x236 Hoping for a white iPhone? Youre gonna be waiting a whileThere’s big problems with the white iPhones, and we’re finally getting confirmation from Apple about the device. Apple hasn’t come right out and said why the trendy white model isn’t shipping, but we’ve been hearing rumours of a problem with the white paint used in the device.

Officially, Apple said “White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year.” Luckily for most, the black edition of iPhone 4 will continue to be for sale, and availability will not be affected by manufacturing problems.

What makes this curious is  Steve Jobs said during the iPhone 4 keynote that the white version was on schedule to ship mid-July. As much as it sucks, I had to chuckle a little when I read this notice. Historically, Canada as well as other  countries have experienced delayed releases for new Apple products. The iPad, for example, was delayed two or three times.

So, how’s it feel being Canadian?

iPhone 4 Bumper Case program goes live…on iTunes

iTunes2 208x300 iPhone 4 Bumper Case program goes live…on iTunesWe spent a lot of time yesterday trying to figure out how this Bumper program would work, and we certainly never expected that Apple would be releasing an iPhone App to take care of the problem. But, it certainly makes a ton of sense now that we think about it. How do you stop everyone and their brother from trying to get a free bumper? You create an App.

The application from Apple will check your IMEI and serial number on your phone to guarantee that you have an iPhone 4, and then it will let you pick out a case. It makes a ton of sense to do it this way over a traditional web form.

As a quick aside, I’m pretty annoyed by people running out and getting a free bumper for the sake of getting a free bumper. Sure, if you have a problem with your phone, you’re entitled to take part in the program, but if you’re not having any problems with your phone, that’s another story altogether.

If you’re not having any problems with your iPhone 4, are you still planning on picking up a free bumper? If so, why? Let us know in the comments.

New iMacs are just around the corner.

New iMacs are just around the corner. Photo New iMacs are just around the corner. Is your iMac getting a bit long in the tooth?  Is it time for an upgrade?  If I were you I would hold off on buying that new iMac.  According to AppleInsider, Apple has informed their resellers that inventory is low and to sell what they have.  So what does this all mean?  Usually when Apple does this, it means that a new product in that line is going to be released real soon.  Apple generally does not keep a surplus of old inventory, so when an updated product comes out, the old version is pretty much sold out.

AppleInsider has a few tidbits of information in regards to the updated hardware.  The new iMacs will have both the Intel Dual Core and Quad Core i5 and i7 processors.  This is a nice upgrade from the Intel Core 2 Duo processors that Apple is currently using.  Back in May Apple upgraded their MacBook Pro line to Intel Core i5 and i7 processors.  It also seems that Apple might be using AMD processors in their Macs.  It’s not clear if Apple is replacing the Intel processor with the AMD processor, or if it will be an option to choose.  Personally, I’ve never been a big fan of AMD processors.  I know back in the day you could over-clock the processor, and they were first to offer a 64-Bit processor for Windows-based computers.  However, I had an AMD processor that was equivalent to a Pentium II processor, and I had more headaches with that chip than I care to explain.  In any event, I think it’s too soon for Apple to switch to the AMD processor.  Intel seems to be a good fit for Apple computers.

Let’s switch gears here, I want to talk about the updated USB that Apple will be using.  They will be employing USB 3.0.  USB 3.0 can transfer 5 Gbps of data.  The current USB Hi-Speed 2.0 standard can only transfer 480 Mbps.  This makes FireWire 800 look like USB 1.1 (USB 1.1 only transferred 12 Mbps).  The only negative I can see is that currently there is no hardware that will support it.  Personally, I think it’s great that Apple is putting this in their computers.  This way when the devices start coming out, your iMac will be ready to support them.

Whenever I am thinking about upgrading my Macs, I refer to MacRumors Buyer’s Guide.  It’s a great resource to see if you should hold off, or go out and buy your new Mac computer.  Also, if you are thinking about selling your old iMac so that you can put some money towards your new iMac, you can check out Mac2Sell.net.  Mac2Sell.net will give you a quote based on your iMacs specs.  I use this site to get an idea of how much I can get for my iMac.  Now, it’s not only good for iMacs, but any Mac computer will be listed on this site.  If you don’t want to hassle with selling your iMac on eBay or Craig’s List, you have other options, one being Gazelle.com.  At Gazelle.com you can enter in your iMac’s specifications, condition, and the items you have for your iMac.  With this information they will generate a quote for your iMac that they will pay you for.  This can be the simplest way to offload your iMac.

The new school year is just right around the corner, and a new iMac would make a nice addition to any dorm room.  The only question is, will Apple release the new iMac in August, or will they release it in September with the new iPods?  If I were to have to bet on when, I would say that they would release it in August.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Apple’s April to June 2010 financial results

July 23, 2010

I’ve been looking over Apple’s 3rd quarter results for fiscal year 2010. In case you haven’t heard Apple made some money last quarter, to the tune of $15.7 billion dollars in sales.

4819458330 4530411e7c Apples April to June 2010 financial results

Apple had some gross margins of $6.13 billionion or approximately 39% gross margins. This means that Apple has around $45 billion in cash that they could use to buy just about anything that they want.

4818835895 06eeebb5aa Apples April to June 2010 financial results

One of the more interesting changes is the increase in sales internationally. In the Americas, sales for the same quarter last year were $4.47 billion. The sales for 2010 are $6.22 billion. This is an increase of 39.1%. Within Europe, sales for 2009 were $2.50 billion and in 2010 sales were $4.16 billion. This is an approximate increase of 66.4% for Europe. Within Japan sales for 2009 were $560 million, while 2010 sales were $910 million. This is an increase of 62.5% in sales.

The biggest increase came from the Asia-Pacfic region. In 2009 sales were $703 million. In 2010, sales for the same region were $1.82 billion. This is an increase of 159.6%. Maybe it’s just me, but this is a HUGE increase. This growth is phenomenal and means that there is a pent up demand within the Asia-Pacific region.

The retail sales also increased from $1.49 billion in 2009 to $2.57 billion in 2010. This represents a 72.5% increase just in retail sales alone.

So what actually caused this increase in sales and profitability? Well, let’s look at the actual unit sales.

We’ll stat with the Mac sales. Within the Americas, unit sales went from 1.147 million to 1.358 million; this is an increase of 18.4% increase in Macs. Within Europe 2009, Mac sales went from approximately 626,000 to 914,000 Macs, a 46% increase. Japan’s Mac sales went from 108,000 to 129,000 units sold. This is an increase 19.44%. Asia-Pacific sales went from 230,000 to 394,000 units. This represents an increase of 71.3%. All of the numbers are quite significant. The total unit sales for 2009 went from 2.60 million to 3.47 million units. This is an overall increase of 33.3% in terms of unit sales.

One interesting statistic to note is regarding desktop sales versus portable sales. In 2009, desktops had 849,000 sales. Within the 2010 time frame, sales were 1.004 million units. This shows an increase of 18.25%. Portable devices went from 1.75 million units in 2009 to 2.46 million units in 2010. This is an increase of 40.7%. Overall, portable sales are 145% higher than desktop sales.

Macs aren’t the only thing that Apple sells. They have these devices called iPods, iPhones and iPad, so let us see how well this category did last quarter.

Due to last quarter being the first quarter of iPad sales, there are no percentage of change, but Apple does have some sales figures. The total number of iPads sold was 3.27 million units. This averages to 1.09 million per month of availability.

iPod sales were the only category that went down in terms of unit sales. In 2009, iPod sales were 10.21 million units and in 2010 iPod sales went down to 9.40 million units. This is a decrease of 7.91%.

iPhones, as expected, jumped from 5.208 million units in 2009 to 8.398 million units in 2010. This represents an increase of 61.25%.

Total net sales amongst all products went from $9.73 billion to 15.70 billion. An overall increase of 61.35%.

Overall, Apple had another stellar quarter. This quarter is better than any other quarter in company history including Q1-2010 which was the holiday quarter for 2009. It will be interesting to see how much Apple can make next quarter. I guess that is only three months away and we will see what happens at that time.
