So long Android, the iPad has just passed you in browser share

ipadvsAndroid 500x133 So long Android, the iPad has just passed you in browser share

We get a lot of drive-by comments from Android users these days. They’re pretty passionate about their device of choice, and they should be — there’s some snazzy Android devices out there. That being said, we’re a Mac blog, so we focus on things like this: the iPad has officially moved ahead of the Android in browser usage share.

Muwahaha.

We’ll save the debate about which device is better for another day, but we will say this — it looks like the iPad is more mainstream than Android at this point, and it only took three months for the iPad to surpass Android in browser share. That’s pretty damn impressive.

Apple’s clearly created a behemoth of a device that could be a contender for years to come. It’s going to be interesting to see how this trend continues once Android starts shipping their own tablet based computers. Sure, there’s a couple out there, but for the most part the Android tablets are just starting to come to fruition. It should be an interesting year.

The iPad is a tablet, the Android platform is currently only used on cell phones. While they both have similar browsing capabilities (read: iPad is giant phone), they are COMPLETELY different devices, and therefore not even comparable.

To bring this down to a level you can understand, this would be like comparing network usages of Macbooks vs iPhones. While people use alot of internet on their iPhones, it’s usually only on the go. Macbooks, on the other hand, are used at home, with much more internet usage during the time they’re used (for math people, MBs used/time is greater for laptops than phones.

The iPad has been used by many people as a laptop replacement, so it’s technically a netbook for most, and should be competing with laptops, not cell phones. This is why greater network usage of iPad users cannot be compared to that of Android phones.

Ask a dozen people if an iPad has replaced their cellphone for on-the-go computing. I bet it hasn’t. Many people still use laptops on the go (just look at MTA riders in NYC), so any arguement that iPads have replaced only on-the-go cellphone use is also invalid.

The arguement you’re making is contrived and merely a way to shut down the Android community. Look at the facts here and you’ll know why my points are logically valid. i respect this being an Apple-focused blog, I really do. Please, don’t lose that respect by making illogical assumptions.

Thanks for the comment, despite the condescending tone. The iPad is very much a mobile device, and despite your faulty logic in classifying the iPad, you’re still not getting the point. The iPad had passed android devices in browser market share. It doesn’t matter if it’s a desktop or mobile replacement. What matters is that more people are using ipads to surf the net than android devices. If you want to compare apples to apples I can look up iPhone browser share and compare that to android devices. Something tells me that’ll be a lot more lopsided.

And, btw, thanks for rephrasing my point above in the last paragraph.

Its clear Apple had a strong start but just reading the latest announcements its clear Apple have a massive fight on their hands. Apple is going to lose on current course. Forget iPad, there will be others, new funky, cheaper that will challenge. However, Apple has made some major flaws and this has now turned many against apple. Its adobe heavy handedness. This is strange because flash etc made the internet funkier, and places like youtube fun to be in. So now Steve Jobs claims its buggy. Perhaps another agenda i think Steve. Apple uses Object C, is closed off, compare this with the massive market of Java technical people out there, so no contest. Also all the other manufacturers are backing android more and more. Cisco, IBM and the others are getting in on the game because its OPEN SOURCE. Now people are saying it by name “android” and if you read the latest research there’s been a 350% growth on android and the apps market is accelerating at such an exponentiate rate, Apple do not have a hope in hell. Greed and control and mistreating its customers (the handset signalling fiasco) will cost Apple dear. But look, a new apps building tool (that accelerates Android) is the icing on the cake. However do not forget Google is innovating heavily across its technology, and new standards around Chrome, and plugins. They also have unique statistical knowledge (helps speech recognition) and they will use that to their advantage.

Everyone i hear wants Android, and its getting so good now, it has features better than the iPhone. Time will tell but i think apple are going to get desperate so watch this space. You already see Blackberry trying to do the same but i think they are a spent force for the new hearts and minds. It is between Apple and Google and my prediction is that Google will win.

Its Android OS will also serve as basis for web tv, and that has backing of several big names including Sony.

Apple’s got to arrogant and this lesson will cost them dearly in this battle is my prediction.

Not only has it overtaken Android, but look at the slope of that curve! Not quite the proverbial ‘hockey stick’, but definitely a steep one. Also, note that the iPod touch has leveled off and is heading somewhat down. That suggests to me that some of the iPad volume is from the iPod touch (which also makes sense).

Ipad is a netbook killer, not a phone. Please compare IPad with notebook and netbooks. Also please see that Android has already beaten IPod touch. More browsing on IPad means less time spent on native apps on IPad

I think the point that Ceriem was trying to make is that the comparison of the ipad (a coined “almost” laptop killer by many) to android system is irrelevant cause they are not in the same ballpark. I have an ipad and I have an HTC Incredible android phone. Do I sit at home or at the airport on my phone looking at the internet? no. I use my ipad or laptop, even if I can’t fully experience all the websites out there. Of course they will have a higher “browser share”. More people use it just for browsing the web, just as they would a heavier laptop. Any comparison between the two just doesn’t make sense. Even comparisons between the iphone and the android market are mute points since the iphone had such a head start.

Does apple make great products? Yes…for the most part, but they make you inhabit their world. Does google make solid products, so far yes…but time will tell with the release of the android system on a tablet device. I enjoy both companies but I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t rooting for a solid android run tablet that could replace my ipad. We will see….

For the record I have 2 macbook pros and a mac pro for business. So while I enjoy apple products, plenty of other companies produce excellent competition.

Just to be clear, this is not saying there are more people browsing the net with ipads than android phones. It just says that they are spending a lot more time browsing.

I don’t think we needed a chart to tell us that, or that it reveals anything at all about either the ipad or android phones.

While I agree the iPad is a groovy looking little device but it has it’s flaws.

I was on the plane the other day next to a fellow who had one, he was watching a movie and needed to hold the thing upright the whole 2 hours (eep!). I was doing just the same on a samsung netbook. When we both finished I said would you like another movie, he explained I’d need itunes and an apple usb cable and some conversion software for him to watch it on the ipad, instead I just pulled out a dual headphone adaptor and we both watched the second movie on the netbook.

The iPad is great but the only real use I see for it is when your on the couch surfing the net – of which I don’t spend a great deal of time. Even now I’m browsing at work and will most likely not surf any other time, if I need to surf mobile I use my phone. A netbook is just so much more flexible!

Oh I just thought of something, I believe a lot of home automation software runs a flash web interface. This could be a little tricky on the ipad?

  • Aaron Winchester

Just wait for the wetab to come out.
This thing is going to kill the ipad and i own an ipad.
this will do what apple should have done with the ipad.
Then tell me what os is better lol.

The iPad numbers are quite impressive so far, on that I completely agree. However, we are about to be inundated with Android tablets that will cost a lot less and offer the same, and in some case more, functionality. Built in camera, USB slots, SD card, Froyo etc. I think Apple is going to have a real fight on its hands, come next year.

The Pandigital Novel and Augen Gentouch, although both flawed, are giving us a glimpse of what’s to come.
