Send multiple photos at once on the iPad and iPhone

June 29, 2010

If there’s something the iPad excels at, it’s the Photos application. Being able to show off pictures in large resolution is a huge plus for the device, and it’s probably the reason Apple created the iPad Camera Connection Kit. Sometimes people love a photo so much that they want me to email them it directly. No problem; I can send off photos with a couple of quick taps. Select the photo, tap the button in the top right corner, select email, and we’re off the the races. But what about sending off three or four images at once?

The functionality exists on both the iPhone and the iPad.

On the iPad

Instead of opening the photo before you send your email, this time tap the button in the top right corner, then start tapping on the images you want to send to email (maximum is 5). A blue checkmark should pop up every time you tap on the photo.

Now in the top left corner click on the email button. You should now have your mail client popup with the photos all imported into an email.

In iOS 4 for the iPhone

The process is the exact same as above, with the only exception being the way the buttons are labelled. On iOS devices the email button is labelled as “Share” and once you click the button you’re met with another button to email the photos.

It’s pretty straight forward.  You can also use this same process to delete photos en masse by hitting the delete button.  It really does make it easier to manage your photos.  Up until recently I was emailing photos one image at a time.  It was annoying for me, but it was probably even more annoying for the person I was emailing the images to, 10 emails all with one image in them is a bit much.

Firefox 4.0 Beta 1 — Lipstick on a Pig

June 29, 2010

ConceivablyTech is reporting that Mozilla has dropped the first “beta” of Firefox 4.0 as a nightly build. This is the first version that has the new bells and whistles. That said, the new UI isn’t much of a consolation prize from the lackluster Gecko rendering engine. There is a chart that shows that the latest Firefox beta takes well over double the time to render JavaScript than the latest build of Chromium.

The Firefox 4.0 beta still doesn’t pass the Acid3 test, and it scores well below the WebKit browsers in the HTML5 Test. While these may not be realistic tests for how well the browser works, it is an objective demonstration that shows that Gecko is considerably weaker in terms of web standards support than either of the two popular versions of WebKit.

I’ve been off of the Mozilla bandwagon for a while now, and the extension feature of Chrome and Safari have really done away with the last reason why people were hanging onto Firefox. Mozilla has served their purpose, but they just can’t keep up with the WebKit developers.

The iPad is making inroads at universities. Oklahoma State begins a pilot program

June 29, 2010

Cutting-edge teachers see the huge benefits that technologies can have in the class room. From interactive learning tools like smart boards to iPod Touches and iPads, the future is knocking on the door. Anyone in a classroom can tell you the positive effect that these devices have on kids, but so far there’s very little hard evidence to support the claims, which is a problem for bureaucratic types holding the scissors to cut through the red tape. Will these programs be successful enough to warrant budget increases or the additional tuition costs for students?

One-hundred and twenty-five students at Oklahoma State University will find out this fall when educators begin to evaluate the effect the iPad has in the classroom, across five different courses. Students participating in the pilot will have their iPads discounted, so long as they use it in their course programs.

We’re going to be watching this one closely.

What do you think? Do you students out there think that iPads will help in the classroom? Or will it be a giant distraction? Would you do away with textbooks entirely if course materials were available on the iPad?

I know I would, but would you?  Let us know in the comments.

Apple slips up: iWork for the iPhone is obviously on the way

June 29, 2010

What’s missing for Apple’s mobile devices? What’s the one thing that you hear over and over again when non-techies talk about the iPhone and iPad pitfalls? Is it the lack of iWork on the iPhone; the lack of syncing work on both devices? That’s the number one thing I hear these days, and I have to say, these people have a very solid point.

While Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are all available currently on the iPad, they’re missing from the iPhone. Currently moving files from the device to a computer can be a bit of a pain natively, but it’s even more of a pain trying to get those files on your iPhone for editing and viewing. The fact that none of the iWork applications are available on the iPhone yet is a little bit surprising.  It might not be much longer until we see them, though.

Apple slipped up on their international websites and noted, in the Apple Care offerings section, under the “Software support included” section that “Using iWork for iPhone and other Apple-branded iPhone apps” was included in their support program.

This isn’t Apple’s first slip; back about a month ago, Apple introduced the iPhone 4 at WWDC, and there was a slide that also pointed out that users could open a file in “Keynote” on an iPhone.  Apple’s since fixed the graphic.

Hopefully the update comes sooner than later. Actually, while Apple’s at it, I’d like to see the rest of their branded applications ported to both the iPad and iPhone. It’s pretty annoying not being able to use the Remote application natively on my iPad. If you ask me, an iPad remote from Apple could really demonstrate the power of the iPad.

People are STILL lining up for the iPhone 4

June 29, 2010

We’ve seen launch day lineups for a couple of years now, but what we haven’t seen is multiple-day lineups to get an iPhone. We now know that supply on launch day was seriously limited, but what we didn’t know was that people are still so excited about the iPhone 4 that they’re lining up at AT&T stores—still.

Starting today, the iPhone 4 was on sale at AT&T on a “first come, first served” basis. People in line, who weren’t able to secure a device, were asked if they wanted to have a phone delivered to their home when the device becomes available again.

I’m a pretty huge Apple fan, and even I’m surprised that the iPhone 4 is selling this many devices this quickly. I’m not surprised that an amazing phone is being adopted, but I am surprised that people are still waiting in lines instead of placing orders over the phone.

But then again, I hate standing in lines for anything, technology or not.

Steam’s Summer Sale!

June 29, 2010

All right, Steamers! Time to buckle up, get that wallet out, and start buying! From June 24 until July 4, Valve, using its Steam platform, will be having another epic sale on video games. Games included in this sale are not just low-rated independent games, but actually include games like Half Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, and more!

Steam does this regularly, but rarely on this scale. With the number of sales going on, you’d think Steam is trying to sell out of stock before going out of business! To top it off, Steam is also having limited-time sales, which means that there are daily and hourly countdowns to their sales, so you’ve got to act fast!

Get off your high horse and start buying. It’s times like these when the price of a new game (roughly $60) can get you ten games! Venture on over to Steam’s website or log in to the platform to see the ongoing sales.

Aqueduct for the iPhone—a game worth the money

June 29, 2010

The Kieffer Bros. are by far and away my favourite “indie” game developers for the iPhone and iOS devices. Their games Lexic (renamed to Abca), Orba, and Enso have stuff around for a long time on my phone. They’re excellent at creating puzzle games. It’s surprising for even me; I’d never been a huge fan of puzzle games up until playing some of their releases.

You really should try some of these other ones out.

Their newest instalment, Aqueduct, is probably their best one to date. Available on the AppStore today, Aqueduct is literally a game about aqueducts. You have to create a sewer system so that the water flows from one point to another. Along the way you encounter obstacles that make going from point A. to point B a little more difficult. You start with a series of tubes that fit together, and you have to optimize the best way to place them together to reach your endpoint.

It’s really straightforward, but it makes you think.  There were a number of levels that had me scratching my head trying to figure out the best way to complete the puzzle.

The image below demonstrates the steps that I took to complete a level. The top left image is how we started off the the puzzle.  The bottom left it how I arranged the tiles to complete my pipeline, and the biggest image is the completed puzzle.

A Giveaway

The Kieffer Bros. have given us four coupon codes to give away to our readers (US only). Here’s the rules: first four people  to comment below wins.  It’s that simple.  Comment  below, using a legitimate email address as your account, and we’ll forward off a redeemable coupon code.  Again, make sure you have access to a US iTunes account, because if you don’t, these coupon codes won’t work.
