A week with iOS4 on a 3G phone, not worth it

A week with iOS4 on a 3G phone, not worth itI was pretty skeptical about installing iOS4 on my 3G phone, but I thought I’d take one for the team, and try to figure out if there was an added value to the update.

I’m as guilty as everyone else when it comes to craving after the latest Apple product, it usually lasts a couple of months, but eventually I get over it. I almost pulled the trigger on a 3GS iPhone, but managed to talk myself out of it at the last second. There just wasn’t enough new there for me to justify a new contract with Rogers. iPhone 4 on the other hand is a huge update, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to forgo an upgrade.

But, before upgrading to the new phone, I figured that I’d spend some time with iOS on an iPhone 3G, just to see if I could do without the upgrade. Turns out, if you’re wanting to run iOS, you’re gonna want to update. We all balked at Steve Jobs’ comments about the 3G iPhone not being able to handle multitasking, but after a week of iOS use, I can see his point. My 3G phone is starting to become pretty useless to me. I fear for the super early adopters who picked up the iPhone 2G model, it really sucks, but your’e gonna have to update your phones.

Outside of carrying the new iOS tag, and folders, there’s not much you’re going to be getting on the 3G iPhone, or the 2G version, except a giant headache.

What’s not coming to iOS on the 3G?

iBooks, it’s no where to be seen. Sure, Apple could change their mind, but at the time of writing, 3GS phones have been getting access to the iBooks application in the AppStore. If you’re on a 3G phone, you’re out of luck. No iBooks for you! Next!

Fast App Switching is also missing from the 3G model. We expected that though, since Steve Jobs himself said the device wouldn’t be able to handle the software to run multitasking. I know a lot of jailbreakers who would disagree with that statement, but I digress.

Bluetooth Keyboard Support (White KB + 3G). We’re not 100% sure about this one. We tested with one of those White Keyboard models, and the iPhone wouldn’t find the bluetooth pairing. So, it could be the keyboard, or iOS. If anyone can provide further information, we’d appreciate it.

What you will get on the 3G

Most of the little things coming to iOS will be present on the 3G iPhone. Digital zoom, unified inbox, folders, and the ability to turn on/off cellular data are all present. The game centre application is also on the device, but we’re not sure how that’s going to play out until games start implementing the service.

So, what’s the story, morning glory?

I wish I never upgraded to iOS 4, and I’ll be reverting my phone back as soon as possible. I may upgrade to an iPhone 4, but until then, I’ll be forgoing the software update on my iPhone 3G. The phone has become unresponsive and lags a lot more than 3.1.3 ever did. Something as simple as unlocking the phone from sleep mode now has a couple of second delay attached to the usual timeframe. Something that is just not acceptable when it comes to a phone. Having a lag when answering your phone could be the difference between answering a call in time or having to recall your caller. That can get annoying in a hurry.

I’m grateful that Apple’s giving us the ability to upgrade our “legacy” phones to new versions of the OS, and more importantly, that they’re trying to maintain the software in a way that won’t completely hobble the device, but at some point the cost of progress is going to mean leaving behind a version or two of the device. It seems like that time is now, and the 3G iPhone has officially gone the same route as PowerPC. I hate it as much as you do, but until my iPhone 3G actually dies on me, I’m going to have a hard time justifying an upgrade.

What would be awesome is if companies, including Apple, took a moment and optimized their code to run on some of these legacy devices. If they’re truly embracing a “green” movement, it would certainly mean less iPhones in a landfill, then Apple would make sure that their devices remained functional for their shelf-life.

Update: With the official release of iOS 4 yesterday (June 21, 2010) Apple released iBooks to all iPhone users in the App Store.  So, if you want iBooks on your iPhone, hit up the App Store.

We're testing out a new service called Spread.Us. Help us share our stories!

oh you mean Mircosoft? Windows 7 with aero turned off runs great, even on a Pentium 3...no joke.

Almost two hours after iOS 4 was released, version 1.1 of iBooks.app did become available in the App Store in various countries, expanding compatibility to iPhones, including iPhone 3G.

I think that Apple's agreement with Penguin Books will go into effect fairly soon, making paid iBooks available to Canadians within the near future. I only cared about using my own downloaded Project Gutenberg ePub books on the iPhone, so I'm satisfied, but the screen really is too small for reading, as noticed in other book applications, so I won't be reading much until I eventually get an iPad.

I agree with many of your points but I was able to run iBooks on my 3G. I just wish I could change my background for some crazy reason I was looking forward to that.

You can get iBooks for the 3G - LOOK IN THE APP STORE
It doesn't come prepackaged with the update.
Simples.

I haven't had much of a slow down with ios4 on my 3G yet.

Hi,

I have a 3G & even though IBooks was not installed when I did the upgrade to IOS4, I could install it seperately from the Apps Store.

Cheers,
Shayne

has anyone got any more information about the bluetooth keyboard stuff working on the 3G phone?

cheers

Do you really think that Apple wants you to be hanging on to the iPhone 2G or even 3G at this point? Do you really think they care about being green? That doesn't help their stock prices. We, as customers, could help it effect their bottom line but we, as customers, don't push loudly for greener technologies so they do what makes them money. Go buy a new phone and keep Steve happy.

Actually, iBooks doesn't appear to be available in the iOS 4 installed on an iPhone 3G S, either, and I haven't found an iBooks for iPhone app on the Canadian or American iTunes App Stores. Therefore, I'm curious about your statement that "3GS phones have been getting access to the iBooks application in the AppStore." If an iBooks app for anything other than the iPad can be found anywhere, I'd really like to know where.

I was thinking that my developer (Golden Master) release was lacking, but people who have been upgrading via iTunes today—at least in Japan—have been stating that iBooks can't be found on their iPhone 3G S or in the App Store. I also wondered whether it was just unavailable in Canada, but I don't see it in the U.S. App Store, even hours after the official release of iOS 4.

I have a 3G in Canada and the iBooks app wasn't there after the update. So I did some checking and I did find it in the Canadian app store today and downloaded it and it seems to work fine. The only content I believe is free stuff right now from Project Gutenberg but I was able to download a few titles and read them.

i got them with jailbreak. and still, it's faster than 3.1.3.

there is always reason to jailbreak.. unfortunately.

well they actually optimized some stuff, because i have ios 4 on my 3G with background and multitasking, and yes, multi isn't the fastest in the world, but everything else in the UI is faster..

how did you get multitaking & background Paul? without jailbreaking?

This "out with the old, in with the new" stuff is frustrating. My iPhone 2G still runs perfectly, and I've been using the crap out of it for the last two and a half years. Its a great device so I'm sad to think that I'm about to lose support for it. That aside, im really excited to get my iPhone 4.

You've got a freakin' beta OS on your phone - give us another report when the GM is released.

It is the GM: http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/06/07/public.release.scheduled.for.end.of.june/

I'll check the build numbers on Monday :)

Keep me posted. I really, really hope I was misled. ;)

everyone seems to forget that for each thing that runs the processor has to schedule things including cycles and memory allocations. When you multitask with many apps running, eventually you will run out of cycles, out of memory, and out of swap, and then the only thing you'll experience is degrading performance.

But then again everyone seems to be happy with the battery draining life of the android phones...all 65 different versions of them.

iOS on the 3GS should run nicely and on the 4..even nicer. Can't wait

Mike

Hi

I have install iOS4 on my 3G iPhone and it is still as responsive as it was with previous version of the OS.

So maybe it is just your phone?

Not having the other features is a pain but I will be upgrading to the new iPhone when it is release in oz.

Craig

The only "green" movement they are concerned with is the amount of green ($)they are depositing in the bank every day.

Guess you going to have just jailbreak the phone and install backgrounder.

Landfill for my 3G? No way. Many sites will purchase my old phone for over $100. They will resell it or tear into useful pieces, but for $100 bucks you know most of it is not headed underground. YouRenew is sitting in my favorites, awaiting the arrival of my iPhone 4 and the recycling of my 3G.

I'll buy it, $150 if you can post to UK. Can't go wrong with that, let me know.
