CNET is reporting that they have sources that say Google is planning on creating a digital music store sometime this year (2010). After finding a Google Music logo some weeks back, this report is all but confirmation that Google is jumping into the music distribution fray.
Steve Jobs made it clear earlier this year that certain departments in Google want to kill off Apple. Of course, he was referring to the Android team in specific. As of now, the Android music management system is extremely lacking. If not for third party software, the Android would be stuck in the 1990s as far as music goes. “Oh, you know, just drag some MP3s onto the device.” Frankly, that is unacceptable in my mind. Music is a big area where Apple has a huge lead over Android. Let’s hope Google is trying to fix that problem.
Presumably, Google’s music store would offer DRM-free MP3s or AAC files. Would you be willing to use their store to buy you music? Do you think a web interface can compete with a dedicated store like iTunes?
