Don’t expect OS X 10.7 to be locked down like the AppStore. Steve says, “Nope.”

April 26, 2010

I was in the middle of a huge post about the rumors that OS X 10.7 would have apps locked down like the AppStore. Circulating around the internet late last week was the rumour that developers would have to get permission from Apple in order to let users install their software in OS X.

Steve cleared it all up with a one word email.

Fernando Valente wrote to Steve asking if the rumours were true. Steve responded in typical Steve fashion, with a one word answer, “Nope.”

The internet collectively sighed in relief when reading that email response. Could you imagine the mess that would happen if Apple tried to unilaterally implement an AppStore system across all of their platforms retroactively? It’d be a giant mess, and it’s not something that Apple could do on a dime either, it’d take a lot of planning. Surely, the PR on something this big would be catastrophic. People don’t like being locked in, and when it comes to the desktop, that extends across all the typical computing boundaries.

Mac users would revolt.

Mac OS X Tips Customize your Dock Photo 150x150 Mac OS X Tips Customize your DockWould you like to have more control over your Dock?  Would you like to have it appear on the right or left hand side?  Maybe you would just like it to auto hide when your not using it?

Ok, here is what you will need to do.  First open System Preferences, then click on Dock.  You should see a window that looks like the image below:

Screen shot 2010 04 25 at 9.16.07 PM 500x267 Mac OS X Tips Customize your Dock

In here you can change the size of your Dock Bar, as well as the Magnification.  You also have screen position options, they are as follows:

  • Left
  • Bottom
  • Right

These three options let you position the Dock Bar on your screen.

The next option is for minimizing windows.  Your have two different effects:

  • Genie effect
  • Scale effect

The first is pretty self explanatory.  When you minimize your window it lowers itself in the Dock Bar like a Genie going into his lamp.  The Scale effect simple minimizes the window without any special animations.  Out of the two, I like the Genie effect.

Finally at the bottom, there are three check box items:

  • Minimize windows into application icon
  • Animate opening applications
  • Automatically hide and show the Dock

The first option will save you on Dock real estate, because it will minimize within its own icon, as opposed to adding itself to the Dock Bar.  The animate option is also self explanatory.  The last option is one that will be highly useful if you really need screen real estate, or you simply do not wish to see the Dock Bar.

The Fluent News app brings you all the news you need to know…sort of. It pulls the most recent news stories into one easy feed of

Fluent News Fluent News gets fluent...with news

headlines, coming from Reuters, Fox, ABC, Washington Post, NPR, BBC, etc. So, anything that happens internationally, you’ll know about! You can search for your news by inputting keywords, search by section (i.e. Business, Weather, Entertainment, etc), save articles of interest, and also share articles through Facebook or Twitter.

What I love

I love that all the news from every source is in one location – it makes it handy to not only find all the top stories, but also get more than one angle for major stories. I also love that I can search by section – if I just want to see what’s going on in the business world, that’s all I need to see! I also like the integration aspect to social networks – saves me from tweeting an interesting story on my own.

What I don’t lovess3 Fluent News gets fluent...with news

One thing I’d like to see from this app is geo-specific news. As a Canadian, more specifically in Ottawa, I’d like to see some Canadian news, or even articles from Ottawa Citizen, or National Post. All the big American networks are on here, but I get enough of that from basic cable. Give me something a little more personalized.

Overall it’s a great app. It’s free, so there’s no reason not to download it – the only thing you’ll be is a little more informed.

Israel lifts the banhammer on the iPad

banhammer 300x300 Israel lifts the banhammer on the iPadRemember how almost two weeks ago Israel dropped the BanHammer on the iPad because of Wi-Fi concerns? Well, that announcement was made on the 14th of April, and now, eleven days later, Israel is picking up their BanHammer and taking it home.

Israel’s Ministry has cleared the iPad, and it’s now safe for you to take your iPad to Israel. At least now you don’t have to worry about a customs official taking the device outside and putting a couple of bullets in it. Don’t laugh, it’s happened once before.

iPad Camera Connection Kit works with headphones and keyboard

iPad Camera Connection Kit Photo 300x300 iPad Camera Connection Kit works with headphones and keyboardWe all know that the iPad Camera Connection Kit will allow you to upload photos to your iPad.  You have two ways of importing your photos.  First, you can use your SD card connector to upload your photos via an SD card.  Second, you can use the USB connector so that you can connect your camera directly to the iPad.  I would like to focus on the latter of the two connectors, the USB connector.  It was thought to only work with your Digital camera, but it appears that it can work with a couple of other USB devices.

Glenn Fleishman of TidBITS, is reporting that the USB connector seems to work with USB Headphones.

“The Camera Connection Kit for the iPad has a trick up its sleeve: it handles audio, too, via the USB adapter. Plug in a set of USB headphones or a headset that requires no drivers on a Mac – most use a standard audio profile – and the iPad transfers audio output or input and output.”

This is great to hear.  This means you can now use your headset with a boom mic to make VOIP calls with apps like Skype.  So you can put away your Bluetooth Mic, and save some battery life.

A Staff Writer for Electronista writes that you can also connect a USB keyboard to the iPad with the Camera Kit.

“The functionality also extends to keyboards, as a near-simultaneous check has shown that USB keyboards will work as well, although this was partly expected given the functionality of the official iPad Keyboard Dock. The convenience of the USB keyboard is also reduced as there’s no stand when using the adapter.”

Many people are going to be happy to hear that they will not need to go out and buy the Keyboard Dock or a Bluetooth Keyboard if they want to use a physical keyboard.  The only disadvantage I can see is that you will not be able to type in portrait mode.  This is where the Home button is at the bottom and not the side.  Landscape typing should not be a problem at all.

I hope that Apple will start to open the USB connector up to more USB devices, and not close it off to the current devices that work for it.  By opening it up to more USB devices it only makes the iPad more of a laptop replacement.  In my book that is not a bad thing.  As I mentioned in my article – “My first week with the iPad”, I said that I haven’t used my MacBook since I got my iPad.  This still holds true.  For all my portable needs, I’ve been using the iPad.  This is just a portion of what the iPad Camera Connection Kit can do.  If you would like to read a more in-depth analysis of what it can do, checkout Macgasm.net’s very own Susan Pigott’s – “iPad Camera Connection Kit: As Cute as a Pet Rock but Much More Functional” review.

To be banned from buying an iPad… The horror!

April 25, 2010

Lifetime limit reached for iPads Photo To be banned from buying an iPad... The horror!Could you fathom an Apple Store employee telling you that you are banned from purchasing an Apple product?  Would you be stunned, shocked, puzzled, or all of the above?  I know I would be pretty upset if I was told that.  Protocol Snow’s blogger had this exact experience when trying to purchase a couple of iPads for some friends overseas.

It almost reads as a Robin Hood story, where our blogger is Robin Hood, not so much stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.  Moreover, purchasing a hot new item that is only available in the United States, and sending it to friends overseas that are less fortunate.  Well, less fortunate in the respect that they still cannot purchase an iPad.  And, the Apple Store employee is Prince John, not wanting to sell the much sought after iPad.

Our story begins here

The blogger has been purchasing several iPads for friends overseas, following the purchasing protocol of only two per person.  So far this has worked.  Until that one faithful day when the blogger’s world was turned upside down.  Here is what happened:

“I walk into the store today and ask somebody where I can pick up my iPad reservation. He notes my name and says he’ll be back, going behind closed doors to the stockroom.

I take advantage of this opportunity to place another iPad reservation using a store PowerBook. There are a couple more NeoGAF people considering a purchase, but they haven’t paid me yet. Oh well, by the time this reservation comes in, one of them should have made up his mind and sent payment.

But drats, reservations are limited to one per iTunes account. Luckily I have a second account so I used that to place the reservation. No sweat.

The employee emerges a few minutes later with the iPad and I hand over my credit card. If you’ve never been to an Apple store before, instead of checking customers out at a register, the employees use hand-held credit card terminals to ring up purchases. Adds to the hip factor, I suppose.

But instead of using his handheld device, he walks to the back of the store where the “Genius Bar” is. Naught a word spoken. There are registers here but this area is used mainly for technical support. I follow the guy there. He still hasn’t said anything to me. He gives my credit card to one of the staff there and says, “I want you to help me ring up this purchase.”

Guy #2 (looking at the handheld terminal) — “Why don’t you just use that?”

Guy #1 — “I need to check the card for… uh, pre-authorization.”

Guy #2 — “Ok.”

He swipes my card and they click around for about half a minute while looking at their monitor and whispering. Meanwhile, I’m standing on the other side of the Genius Bar, only half paying attention to these two guys. Instead I was curiously watching an employee ask a girl what she loves most about Apple.

Guy #2 (murmuring) — “…yeah, the 14th.”

My attention snaps back when I catch this snippet. April 14th was my last trip to the Apple store, and I had bought 2 iPads that day. When I walked to the Genius Bar, I hadn’t suspected anything out of the ordinary. But now I suddenly realize I will not be walking out of here with an iPad today.

Guy #1 says to Guy #2 — “Hold on, I’ll be right back” and disappears to the stockroom again. Guy #2 is still clicking around, not looking at me.

Me (nonchalantly) — “Is there an issue?”

He’s still staring at his monitor and a few seconds pass before Guy #2 carefully says, “There is a limit to the number of iPads that customers can buy.”

Me (playing dumb) — “Oh, is that right? What’s the limit?”

Guy #2 — “Only 2 per customer.”

Ok, so the gig is up. I stand around waiting for a bit and was preparing to leave when Guy #1 returns.

Guy #1 — “I’m sorry sir, but you have reached your lifetime limit of iPad purchases and will not be allowed to buy any more.”

Me (anticipating that statement) — “Is the iPad limit per person? Per credit card? Per household?”

Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”

Me — “What does that mean? Can I use a different credit card to buy it? I’m buying this for a friend.”

Guy #1 — “You are not allowed to buy this iPad.”

Me — “Uhh… is it ok if I have a family member or friend come to buy it for me? My reservation doesn’t expire until 6:00 PM.”

Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”

Me (suddenly realizing what he’s saying) — “Wait, what? Lifetime? What does that mean?”

Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit of iPads and will not be allowed to buy any more.”

Me — “I’m banned from buying iPads? I know there’s a shortage right now, but I can’t buy any more once there’s plenty of stock?”

Guy #1 — “All I can say is that you have reached your lifetime limit.”

I pause and look at him with incredulity undoubtedly written all over my face. Everybody tells me I have the worst poker face. Hey asshole, nice job with the passive aggressiveness, but who do you think you’re talking to? I’m from Los Angeles; nobody does passive-aggressive like we do!

Me — “Ok buddy, I’m not going to make a scene so I’m leaving. How many iPads is the limit by the way?”

Guy #1 — “That information is not available.”

Me (looking at Guy #2, who has been silent this whole time) — “He tells me that the limit is two.”

Guy #1 — “I wish I could say but I do not have that information.”

Me — “I’ve already purchased more than 2 iPads. Why didn’t anybody else stop me in the past?”

Guy #1 — “I wish I could say but I do not have that information.”

Me — “Alright, I’ve had enough. Have a good day.”

The icing on the cake? When I came home, I found an email from Apple waiting for me. It was an update about my reservation, the one I had placed today in the store using my 2nd account!”

My thoughts

I think what might have happened is when the blogger ordered the two new iPads while waiting for the original reserved iPads it probably sent up the red flag.  In the sense that something in Apple’s systems might have flagged this person as purchasing multiple iPads in a short amount of time.  Since the Apple Store employee couldn’t give the blogger a straight answer to lifetime ban on purchasing iPads.  I think the system wouldn’t allow the sale, and that is the only thing the employee could think of at the time.  It would not be in Apple’s best interest to start banning customer’s from buying their products.

So, the moral of this story is, whether your intentions are just or not.  If you try to purchase too many iPads in a short time span, you too might be banned.  The reality of this happening again is unlikely.

New API to speed up Flash on the Mac

4548554549 27de203745 o New API to speed up Flash on the Mac

It has been known in the Mac world for a while that Adobe’s Flash on the Mac is woefully inadequate when compared to the Windows version. It has been described as buggy, slow, and horrendous. From my own experience, using Flash on any portable Mac has never been a very good experience. Take for instance when I run a YouTube video, the processor pegs itself at 100% and sometimes even higher; meaning that it’s using more than one core, leaving absolutely nothing for everything else to use. This is completely unacceptable for most Mac users. Well, things may get a bit better for us Mac owners.

It appears as though Apple has opened up an API that will allow access to H.264 hardware decoding on some Nvidia Chips. This is great news for both Adobe, which can use the new API for off-loading some of the difficult video codec functions to the much faster Graphics card, and other developers who need the extra umphf. More specifically, applications like Handbrake could use the API for transcoding video.

The exposure of this API will mean that those with specific Nvidia Graphics cards can take advantage of having more standard CPU processing power for their applications. Now, there are some limitations. Most importantly, which graphics cards can handle the API. The list includes:

  • Nvidia Geforce 9400M
  • Nvidia 320M (in the latest 13″ MacBook Pros)
  • Nvidia GT 330M (in the latest 15″ and 17″ MacBook Pros)

This covers most of the newer computers, including the Mac Minis, iMacs, MacBooks and MacBook Pros. However, this does leave older machines, like those running any ATI graphics card, out of the loop. Additionally, if you’re not running Snow Leopard you will not get any performance boost.

Adobe states that there will be an update after their next update to Flash, 10.1, which is slated in the next couple of months. I hope that more developers of applications like Handbrake will be taking advantage of this new API because it will just be a better experience for everybody if applications utilize the newer technology.

3rd Gen iPod Touch shows up on eBay

ebay ipod touch 500x251 3rd Gen iPod Touch shows up on eBay

Lose one prototype and it’s a fluke, lose an additional one and it’s a problem. If Jobs was pissed about the iPhone 4G fiasco, he’s gonna be livid that a third generation iPod touch may have found its way onto eBay. The auction, since removed from eBay, seems to have had the DVT (Design Verification Test) label attached to it, much like the iPhone 4G that was taken apart.

The iPod seems to be about a year old, and confirms that Apple’s been working on iPod Touch models that have cameras. I know a lot of people who’ve been waiting patiently for a camera enabled Touch.

I wonder if this “leak” increases the likelihood that Apple presses charges against Gizmodo.  If they don’t make an example of someone, these leaks are going to keep popping up.
