First impressions of Apple’s iPad

First impressions of Apples iPadAll I have to say about the iPad is, WOW!  This device is spectacular.  First off I’d like to say how responsive the iPad is, I mean you click on an icon and it opens.  You start a movie, and it plays instantly.  The screen rotation is also very responsive.  The apps that were designed for the iPad look exceptional; however, the apps that were not, don’t look all that good.  Plus they loose the screen rotation functionality.

When I first used the iPad, I felt like I was using a device from the future.  And no, it’s not a big iPhone or iPod Touch, it’s better.  The iPad responds to input better than the iPhone does.  The responsiveness of this device is un-parallelled to anything I’ve seen.  I used the keyboard to type, and it was very enjoyable to type on.  At times it could be a bit too responsive, and type letters I barely touched.  Overall, the typing is really good.

Movies are so quick to start on the iPad, it’s incredible.  I had downloaded the ABC streaming app for the iPad, and the videos started instantly, as if they were playing directly from the iPad.  I thought for sure that there would be some delay.  But, surprisingly there was not.

Before I purchased the iPad I downloaded a bunch of free apps from the iTunes Store.  These apps were iPad only apps, as well as iPhone/iPad apps.  Which means they’ll work on either device.  These apps look excellent on the iPad.  They take advantage of every inch of the 9.7-inch LED-backlight glossy display.  In contrast, the iPhone only apps such as Facebook, sized somewhat decently, but it did not fill the screen.  In addition, some other iPhone only apps did not rotate when placed in landscape mode.

Overall, Apple has really outdone themselves with the iPad, from it’s sleek curves to it’s ultra responsive touch interface.  During the All Things D interview with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Walt Mossberg asked Steve Jobs, “Where do you see computers headed?”  Steve Job’s response was, “I want Star Trek.”  These quotes are loosely based from the interview. Well, Steve it appears you’ve given us Star Trek.  I have seen the future of mobile computing and its name is iPad.

About Gerard Lagana

I'm a husband, dad of two great kids, and I have a passion for Apple products. I got my first Mac in 2005, and I haven't looked back. I like the simplicity of the Mac, and how does the motto go, oh yeah, It just works. I think that's the great thing about Macs how the hardware and software work harmoniously together. I've also been in the IT industry for over fourteen years. I've worked with everything from Windows computers to Mac computers. I can say I thoroughly enjoy working with Macs. I can also be found on Twitter, where I continue to geek out on Apple products.

Yeah I love mine. So many great apps to try out and the videos look great playing on it. Only negatives i can give is cant charge through the Mac and the upscaling feature sucks for iPhone apps.

I was able to charge my iPad from my iMac fine. As for the power adapter, you'll only want to use the one that came with it. I agree with you on the iPhone apps, the scaling is something left to be desired.

I think this problem from what I've been reading has been with older macs.

Oh, ok. I haven't heard that. Make sure that you are plugging it into a USB 2.0 port, and not a USB 1.1 port. Hope this helps.
