Which iPad are you?

Which iPad are you Photo Which iPad are you? With about a month to go before the iPad is released, you might be asking yourself, which iPad am I?  Will you be waiting for the 3G version, or maybe you haven’t decided which capacity you want 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB?  I’m personally torn between the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi model.  I’m not to big on having to pay for another data plan, since I already pay for two, with mine and my wife’s iPhones.  I’ll get back to that a little later.  Or are you simply going to wait, because Apple has stated that they would lower the price of the iPad if it doesn’t sell well.

9to5Mac, is currently running a survey asking this very question.  They’ve broken it down between Wi-Fi and 3G, with their respective storage capacities.  As well as two other categories for “Going to pass on this one” and “Comments”.  As I write this article it seems that the 16GB Wi-Fi and the 64GB 3G models, are tied at 18%.  However, there are 29% of the people who took the survey that are “Going to pass on this one”.  These people are the ones that probably have no interest in getting an iPad, or they are simply going to wait for Apple to lower the price.

In my opinion the whole lowering the iPad’s price if it doesn’t do well has a fifty-fifty chance of happening.  Apple never stated what they deem to be “doing well,” and in what time frame they will act on this price alteration.  For all we know Apple might sell the iPad for less at launch.  This would in the long run sell more iPad’s; however, Apple might wait two months and drop the price like they did with the original iPhone.  Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I mentioned earlier that I’m torn between the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi models.  I currently have a 16GB iPhone 3G, and I tend to have about 5GB of free space.  So, I’m not sure if I’m going to need the extra 16GB, because I’m not sure if I want to load my music and Videos on the iPad.  I think I would load more videos than I would music, but I also want to load photos on it.  So you can see my quandary.  I’m also really excited about the iBooks application that will allow me to read books on the iPad.  I’m not sure the size of an iBooks download, so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see which one will better suit my needs and wallet.

I want to take a moment and talk about the 3G data plans with the iPad.  I think it’s great, however, it’s not for me.  The only reason I’m saying this is because I feel at this point AT&T is taking advantage of their current iPhone customers who already are paying for a data plan.  In my case I’m paying for two data plans.  One for my iPhone, and one for my wife’s iPhone.  AT&T should incorporate the iPad with their current iPhone customer’s data plan.  Whatever AT&T’s reasoning for this is, be it for charging twice for the same service, or it might be that they are trying to curtail the traffic on their already over saturated network by deterring customers to get the 3G version, is just simply wrong.  The only thing I can say that they have done right is to provide the service with no contract, and offer two plan options, one for 250MB of data and the other for unlimited data use.

Whichever storage capacity I decide on I know I’lI enjoy using the iPad.  Now I would like to hear from you the reader – Which iPad are you?  Will you be getting the Wi-Fi version, or the 3G version?  Or are you simply going to pass on the iPad?  If you are, I would love to hear your reasons.  If you think it’s just a big iPod Touch, then, I would like to hear from you too.  Leave your comments below.  I would love to hear everyones opinion.  In the end it will make my buying decision that much easier.

I’m wifi 64 Gig. I see me putting a lot of videos on this for my kids and loading pictures to be used in slideshow when not in use. Would love the 3G but as you state, I already pay AT&T for this on my Iphone and can’t see me paying twice for the same thing. I actually can’t believe there isn’t a bigger stink being made about this. AT&T and apple for that matter are not rewarding their most loyal customers.

I can’t agree with you more about the Data Plans. I can see charging customers who don’t have iPhones, but charging those who do is simply wrong. You bring up good points about the 64GB storage capacity. Now you got me think about the 64GB version. But I think I’m still going to go with the 32GB version.

64GB wi-fi…I think I’ll be able to tether it to my mobile phone (in the UK) which has 3G which will make it 3G…unless Apple stop this somehow, I can’t see why anyone (and particularly iphone users) would buy the 3G ipad…the vast majority of the time I use it will be at work or at home, both of which are wi-fied up and for the rarer occasions that I’ll need it away from free or familiar wi-fi sources, I’ll get my tether on…for free!

my understanding is the GPS only works in the 3G version because it gets help from the cell network (as opposed to being a pure sat-based GPS).

Unfortunately in the States AT&T will not open up tethering. If they did I would use that with the iPad.

I won’t be a first-generation iPad buyer – it’s not that I have doubts about the oversized-Touch, it’s just not in my budget for this year. But I can see myself with a 16GB model, mainly because it will only be used at home with our WiFi.

We’ll use it in the kitchen to view recipes; use it in the living room to check TV listings, do the crossword puzzle, read online magazines, and follow advertised URLs; use it at the breakfast table to read various news sites; use it in the bedroom to watch videos/movies/tv shows.

I doubt that we’ll load any music on it, and we’re not big book readers so the bookstore doesn’t mean anything to us. But I am looking forward to apps that will control our home security system, lighting, heating & cooling!

It definitely appears as a glorified iPod Touch. Obviously, if I were offered one I would take it and be insanely happy… but it’s a gimmick. The name is laughable. I’m not quite sure when I would want to use it because when I’m on the move I use my Touch and when I am at home I use my laptop (Asus G60vx). It just doesn’t seem to have a good place for when I would want to use it and I am assuming that it would be the same case for others. It was a great idea with a poor execution. At the moment, it does just as much as the iPod Touch. What it needed would be some huge stupid gimmick that makes everyone feel as if they really need it to continue with their life. Sadly, there was no gimmick offered. Also, MadTV christened the iPad name. I recommend you YouTube, “MadTV iPad.” It’s kind of sad that they still used the name after that.

Sure it’s a big iPod Touch and a swimming pool is a big bath. I thing that I am ready to install a pool!

I will get the 16GB 3G because Im not sure if I will later want a month of the no-contract internet..

  • Bill

I am 64gb 3G. Not that I will get the data plan right away but it’s good to have that “3G” feature. However, I might wait for a bit longer hoping the price will go down. I definitely not going to put music on it but with my 100+ apps (and counting), my video collections, my photos and I know I will be getting quite a lot of books, I will need those extra gigs. I have 32gb iphone and it will be great to relieve spaces for mostly my music.

I will be getting a 32 GB WiFi iPad to start off on the first gen. Mainly because the 32 GB model will not decline in price as fast as the 16GB. WiFi because what is the point of getting a 2nd 3G connection since this first gen cannot do video calls, nor video Skype. When that is up and running on the 2nd Gen iPad or later, then i will sell the 1st gen and get a 2nd+ gen to do that.

Seems like we are on the same page with the storage capacity. I also tend to sell my current Apple products to pay for the new models.

I’d go for a 16/3g. I have an iphone thats at my side at all times so no need to overload it with music. This would be used on vacations for movies, ebook.. less eyestrain than staring at my iphone.. it’ll be the ‘a few days away from my real computer’ since it could be activated by 3g monthly.

I am planning on getting the 64GB with 3G. However, I’m not sure I will use the 3G all that much. As others have already said, I will mostly use the device at home, work, or school. I can jump on WiFi at either of these places so the 3G could end up being a worthless extra expense but I think that is a much better gamble. We all think we know how we will use the iPad (or not use the iPad as the case may be for some) but since this is a new device we will only truly know once we get our hands on one. I might be surprised to find that I use it on the go much more than I thought. Plus, you never know what tomorrow will bring. The 3G just might come in handy. If not then I think it was a risk worth taking and with no contract I will find peace in knowing that it was a one time expense.
I am planning on going with the 64GB because I do plan to put a good bit of my music on it as well as a nice supply of movies. I have a 8GB iPhone 3G right now and I could kick myself for not spending the extra couple buck for not getting the 16GB. In my defense I truly didn’t think I would use the iPhone as much as I do and assumed the 8GB would be enough…guess I learned my lesson.
Also, since I am a student I look forward to downloading a good bit of books. I already have a kindle DX which I love but it is limited in that it an only download Amazon books. With the Kindle app, Barnes & Noble app, iBook store, and internet I will have access to a much larger supply of books on the iPad. Heck, Google books alone will provide me with a nice boost!

I’m a 64GB with 3G, but I’m not in any hurry. Let all those early adopter types kick themselves for buying the ipad before the inevitable price drop. also I think the rumors about Apple adding a video camera are going to come true. It would be a great video phone!
