Using VNC requires opening of inbound TCP ports for remote access, which can compromise security. RHUB remote access is a better alternative. It doesn’t necessitate changes in firewall settings; it suffices if the remote PC is Internet-enabled.

I love remote desktop. Sadly the price point is a little bit steep for me right now. I wish I had some extra funds to pick it up. Hopefully after the holidays. ;)

Glad to know I'm not crazy. I've been trying out Niel's suggestion (above) and I'm starting to like it quite a bit. I'd recommend giving it a shot. :)

Chicken of the VNC does not show the remote cursor which may be part of the speed difference compared to Screen Sharing (which we love). We routinely use all of these products and in the order that you recommend them. We also augment them with GoToMeeting because of port routing issues. VNC Server will not start as a service on the new Microsoft server operating systems, so RDC is the best free approach to get to them.

Screen Sharing's big brother is Apple Remote Desktop which provides great access to large lists of client machines.

With the installation of a VNC server on Windows (RealVNC Free) and Linux machines, you are able to have an iTunes style interface to connect and control all the platforms using one client.
