Call me crazy, but there’s just some things I like keeping offline. Facebook was great with sharing information with some of your real-life friends, twitter is great for sharing random thoughts, but what about those things that are meant just for me? Things that I want to remember, or a feeling I want to express without sharing it with the world? What about some notes I want to keep about my day and the client work that I did during office hours?
Well, there’s an application for that… and it’s for OS X.
Mémoires is a journal, or as the girls call it, a diary. I’ll let you decide what you want to call it, but from here on out I’ll be referring to it as a journal, and I’ll be picturing it as the manliest journal a man could ever create.
It’s light weight and is everything a journal needs to be. You should check it out. I’d say more, but I think the screenshots speak for themselves. ;) Oh yeah, it’s 29.95

If you haven’t realized yet that OS X has a host of hidden features that make lives easier than you need to bookmark our RSS feed. We’re constantly trying to shed some light on some of these things as we find them.
Did you know that you can auto complete words in OS X? Maybe you know how to spell the first four letters of a word, but have no idea how to complete that word. Well, you can pick your word from a list.
All you have to do is type out part of your word, hold down the shift key, and press F5 at the same time. If you’re using a newer keyboard, or a laptop keyboard that has an FN key on it you’ll need to push FN+Shift+F5.
Added Bonus: Did you know you can auto complete stuff in terminal as well? All you have to do is click the escape key twice and it will auto complete file names and directories so long as there’s no duplicate file. If there is a duplicate it’ll match all the characters up until it’s not sure which file name you might want. At that point just add the next character and hit escape again. It will eventually auto complete the text for you.

I am a huge fan of tweaking my operating system until it is exactly how I want it. People do a lot of complaining about the Finder, but I find it to be rather nice once I have everything tweaked properly. In this post, I’ll show you how to change the icon size and grid spacing in your Finder window.
Launch a Finder window, and navigate to the folder of your choice. Now, press CMD+J to bring up the view options. You will see two sliders. One of these is titled “Icon size” and the other is titled “Grid spacing.” Moving the first slider with either increase or decrease the size of your icons. The second slider will alter how closely spaced the icons are together.

By making small tweaks like this, you are well on your way to making your computer work the way you want it to work.

You know how you can “Find” stuff in a Finder window when hitting CMD+F? Well you can use a bunch of smart options to filter your searches. There’s some nice options, but the real power lies in the “Other” listing. There’s probably a hundred other options available to you. My favourite out of the bunch is by label. I’ve been known to use labels for stupid things in the past, but it’s also helped me organize files and where a certain file might be in my work flow. For instance, a completed design composition might get a blue label, and something that needs immediate attention gets a red label. Being able to search by these labels adds a great deal of flexibility to my work flow.
To get access to them you’ll have to click the other option, then search for label. If you want it to be available all the time make sure you click the check box beside it. Click okay, and you’re off to the races. Here’s a photo gallery showing how easy it is to set up, and how good it is at finding my labelled files.

I don’t care what you say, iTunes’ shuffle isn’t even remotely random. I know what you’re going to say, “iTunes has a nice slider to fake it’s randomness.” Well guess what, it’s still a lie. A BIG FAT LIE. Guess what else, that option is GONE. Presto-buh-bye. I’m not sure when it happened, but some time in the last batch of updates it’s disappeared. It’s either gone permanently, or buried somewhere that I can’t find.
I loved me some Bowie up until a month ago. I went through stages in my life where a little more Bowie could be handled, but my iTunes had a man crush on him. He’d come up more often than anything else in my playlist. Sure, it’s probably all in my head, but the fact remains, out of 30gb of music 5 bowie albums ruled the roost. Apple once gave us the ability to do a real random shuffle, or to do a fake random shuffle, where the computer would make the shuffle seem more random by human standards. You know, by not allowing Bowie to play 5 times in a row.
Anyway, now that the option is gone iTunes’s man crush returned in full force over the last bit, and you know how I got over it? I deleted Bowie. Gone! Eat that.
I feel a little bad now, axing Bowie, when it seems like Apple was the one who forced him to come up more often by removing my ability to toggle between a real shuffle and a fake shuffle.
