The Secret Sound Option in Mac OS X

Grant Brunner | Tue, Nov 3, 2009

Speak up! I can’t hear you! Sometime turning your sound down to the last notch just isn’t quiet enough. You still want to hear something, but you need it to be as soft as possible. Luckily, OS X has a secret way of adding one more level of sound between completely mute and the lowest notch.

First of all, press the Reduce Volume (aka F11) button until you can’t hear anything or see any of the white notches. Now press the Mute button. It may sound counterintuitive, but you should now hear your audio very softly. If your heads-up display looks like the picture below, you’re doing it correctly.
