Canada finally gets real television shows in iTunes.

Joshua Schnell | Fri, May 29, 2009

From the “This might be old news, but it’s new to me”department–it looks like the Canadian iTunes store might have finally given us lowly Canadians access to real television shows.  You know the kind I’m talking about, the big networks and not the crappy Canadian content.  But, it’s not like it really matters much.  A season pass to the Office is $69.99 and an episode is $3.49.  I’m pretty sure they’re deluding themselves. Canadians aren’t stupid, and in a country where copyrights are still a little blurry, I’m sure most people will download the shows.

For those not wanting to do the math, that’s $64.99 USD for a seasons pass, and $3.64 USD for an individual episode.  Looks like Canadians are once again getting a double “Apple Tax”.  My guess is the additional money is going to paying off the Globals and Rogers around  Canada.  Lame.

Josh: Nice rant, but you're doing the math backwards; $3.49 is actually $3.20 USD, not $3.64. Of course, with the Canadian $ gaining $.08 in the last month, we could be heading towards parity again, or even worse (in this situation) a higher dollar, but Canadians have always benefited, just a little, from that $.99 price point on music.

Of course, the price is still about $.23 higher than what they're paying down in the states. And as the Canadian $ gets stronger, that discrepancy is going to climb. The dollar would have to plummet down to…well, I'm not sure, and it's too late to try and figure out the math, but it'd have to drop down pretty low to gain iTunes TV show parity with Americans.

Me? I'm just hoping that since Canada walks the cultural tightrope between our British heritage and our American overlords, er, neighbours, that we get some Brit-shows in the iTunes store, specifically Dr. Who and Torchwood.
