That spinning rainbow beach ball that we’ve all come to love for all the wrong reasons has its own little application. Â It’s called Spin Control and it lets you track down the point where an application choked on its computations. Â Each time CoreGraphics notes an app is not responding, Spin Control takes a sample from the application and figures out what particular part of the code is running and creates a log of it.
Now before you spout off and get all “this is a developer tool” on me, I think it’s important to note that anyone who’s trying out beta software or providing comments on applications in a public forum should be giving this application some use. Â It lets us keep notes on crashes, and see the code that’s messing up and running at the time when that lovely beach ball appears on us. Â Help the developers out. Â If you want to test software, you need to get this. Â Let’s deflate those beach balls as much as possible.
For the record, Spin Control is part of the developer tools that are found in the Xcode package, which comes free on with all new computers and each version of leopard. Â If you’ve lost your disk you can find it on Apple’s developer network.

Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit (MacBU) has released security updates for both Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac. These security fixes close some Excel holes which could lead to arbitrary code execution and were fixed on the Windows side with this month’s updates as well.
These updates are available by going to Help -> Check for Updates within any Office for Mac application. The update is about 154MB or thereabout, and is a combo-update, which includes all of the previous Office 2008 patches.
This update is highly recommended for all Office 2008 for Mac users.
For the less-detail oriented, or if you wish to obtain a copy of the update for Off-line installation (or in a big environment) head to Microsoft’s KB Article 968694 and download the link.
For those who want all of the details, you can read about all of the updates at Microsoft’s Security Bulletin here

Games don’t have to have jacked up graphic to be fun. Â For me personally the best games I’ve played recently tend to have a retro and old school feel to them. Â They focus on game play and not on the Wow factor. Â I thought it would be fun getting your insights on iPhone/Touch games on twitter and the responses I got eventually revealed a bit of a trend–the retroesque games are big…really big. Â I thought I would pass along 4 of the most interesting and exciting ones so you can check them out.
Instead of writing up review for each, I’ve attached videos of the game play. The titles above each will link you to the game in iTunes.
