Changing your default browser

Joshua Schnell | Fri, May 30, 2008

I forgot how much of a pain it is to not change your default browser. I have Firefox open and plenty of pages pulled up, but when I click on a link in Twitter, or any other application for that matter, Safari starts bouncing in my dock. Safari is a great browser, but I just happen to prefer Firefox, so I decided to change my default browser.

In order to change your browser default you need to:

  1. Open Safari
  2. Click on Safari, then Preferences in your menu bar
  3. Under the Default Tab, select your browser that you want as your default.

You can also do this without having to start Safari (just in case starting Safari REALLY bugs you).

    In Firefox:
Go to Firefox Menu -> Preferences
Then, in the main tab, click the “Check now” button at the very bottom. If Firefox isn’t the current default browser, you’ll be prompted to make it so.

In times gone by in OSX, you could also use the internet preferences pane in System Pref’s, but that’s gone now.
