Firefox releases native Mac theme for 3.0 in a nightly build.

Joshua Schnell | Mon, Feb 4, 2008

According to the statistics of this site our users are split between Safari and Firefox.  But the stats have been climbing for Safari over the last month.  Last year Firefox had 10% more usage on Macgasm than Safari, but so far this year Safari has .4% more users.  That’s it… point four.

Now this could be a sign of people getting fed up with Firefox’s runaway RAM problems, or a little indication that a ton of new Mac users are using Safari over Firefox, for the similar reasons that Winblows users use IE… it ships out of the box.  One thing is for certain however, Firefox is really trying to get more market share with Apple users, so they’re doing everything they can to make Firefox on the Mac look like Safari.  According to Ryan Tomayko the new firefox nightly build looks exactly like Safari. I MEAN EXACTLY.  How lame is that.  You can see his screenshot here.

Are they now defaulting the Mac-esque theme they were first only advertising with first-launch of the beta?

I know I put 3.0b2(?) on my iMac about a month ago, and the default theme was still classic FF, but on first launch they advertised a theme to make FF look more at home in Mac. I grabbed it, just because, ya know?

But, yeah, my question: is this prepacked and defaulted now?

I’m not too sure. I haven’t had a chance to give the latest nightly an install. From what I hear it’s pretty risky business at this point. I’ll give it a whurl on my laptop and let you know how it goes.

I’ll tell you Josh, the 3.0 beta has worked tremendously for me on the iMac, and I’ve noticed a significant improvement in performance over FF2.

The only thing keeping me from going to FF3 on all of my machines in plug-in support.

I’m currently using Firefox 3.0 beta 2 on Mac, using the theme (which is called Proto, available here as a theme, installable on beta2.) It’s a very nice theme, but I’m currently using version 0.9.1 instead of the latest 0.10.1 – it’s a lot better looking than the extremely rounded corners of the latest version.

I’ve found problems on addon support – but using Nightly Tester Tools usually fixes this (disable version check.) The only thing it can’t do is to disable requiring secure updates, which has prevented me from installing a few addons.

Firefox 3.0 beta 2’s speed is very good. I’m very impressed by it.
